Xbox 360 gamertag and corrupted data issues?

Post by heavy liquid »

I've been having an annoying problem and I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out, since there's a fair number of people here with J360 consoles.

I have a US Elite and a Japanese Arcade unit. My US is hooked up to my main TV and the Japanese 360 is in my basement, hooked up to my computer monitor. This is because it's a decent size (26 in) and I can pivot it for vertical shmups. When I switch between the two systems, I pop out my 120GB HD and the wireless adapter and plug it into the one I want to use. I've only had the Japanese 360 for a bit over two months, and everything has worked great! But that's changed the last couple weeks. Here's what happens:

I can log in and play fine on the J360, but when I switch the HD to the US360, my profile comes up as corrupted. I have to delete the corrupted profile and recover my gamertag on the US360 in order to log in and use it. What's weird, is that even though the US360 says my gamertag is corrupted, if I plug it back into the J360 my gamertag is fine and it logs me right in! Once I recover my gamertag on the US360, I can play fine. But after I go and play on the J360, I'll have to recover it once I go back to the US360. I have about 4 other profiles that all come up as corrupted on the US360 now, the same issue as my main gamertag.

It's also started doing this with games. Games that could be played on both systems used to be no problem. But now they are. For example: I started playing Ghostbusters on the J360, and then just last night tried to later continue my game on the US360 and it said my game save was corrupted, and I would have to delete it and start a new game. I went back downstairs and plugged the HD back into the J360, and continued my game no problem.

Anyone have any ideas? The weird thing is that it's only recent, and I could quickly and easily switch between the two consoles without any problem. It's just such a hassle recovering my gamertag EVERY time I move to the US360, as it takes about 10 minutes or so to download the data. Not to mention that the game saves are not screwed up, too.

I can't say I've had this happen to me (yet), but I haven't pulled out the Japanese 360 lately. I use a memory unit to carry my gamertag though, and I have a 20gb hard drive on each.

I'd be very interested in knowing if this problem is isolated or if I have to be careful switching between my consoles from now on...

Thanks for the replies.

Vokatse: There haven't been any 360 updates that I've noticed, so I doubt that's it. That's also one of the reasons I didn't sign up to test the new dashboard. I don't want two different versions of the dashboard to confuse anything. I don't know if it would make a difference, but better to be safe. I can wait the extra couple weeks until they roll it out for everyone.

StarCreator: I've tried keeping my profile on the memory card and switching that along with my HD, but it still gets corrupted. But you've got me thinking... I have both Japanese and US full games installed on the same HD. Maybe it's not good to have different region games saved to the same HD? Maybe having two hard drives with (one dedicated for each console) would be better?

One other question for people with multiple consoles: I have my settings so that I automatically log in with the same profile on both units. Does anyone else do this? Maybe this is a problem?

My profile goes all over the place - at least five different US 360s and my JP 360 - and I haven't had any issues at all with it. I have auto sign-on turned on as well.

That's good to know, so I can rule that out. Do you have any different region games saved to the same hard drive? I'm guessing not since you mentioned having separate 20gb drives.

I think I'm going to buy another HD so that they each have a dedicated drive, and just use a memory card to transfer my profile like you do-- hopefully that'll do the trick!
