The IC09 Shmups Tourny - Results!

Post by spadgy »

The incredible IC09 event saw us run two shmup 'tournaments' - one on the Saturday that was attended by 16 entrants, and one on the second day attended by just six!

Each day had the same format, with knock-out rounds that saw half of the entrants eliminated each time, with the top two making the final.

We had to think on our feet as the games on offer and the machines set aside changed, but we drew a sizable crowd on day two, with around 15-to-twenty watching the final. It really was very casually organised, and I know there's plenty of ways to pick holes in the structure, but we had a bloody good time, and the atmosphere was great.

To all of you who refused to enter, even though it was just for fun - BOOOOOOOO! And to markedkiller, who missed both through bad luck, commiseration's!

And to all who did enter - thanks!

That must have been a lot of fun. Congrats to the the winners. Wish I didn't live halfway round the world from there.

Did you allow the cat in Feveron?

The tournament was great fun on both days, though admittedly I was both a bag of nerves and completely out of practice on the Saturday, and subsequently failed to make much of an impression. Got my head on during Sunday, and did better.

Thanks to spadgy for running it, and the participants on both days. Very enjoyable watching, talking strategy, and playing the games.
Hoping for IC'10 and a much bigger turnout for the shooting game tournament. ^_-

@croikle:
While someone on the Sunday did ask me about Uotaro and how to access it, no-one actually used the Cat for their runs. I did say to someone that the Cat does have a big advantage in power if you're well-versed with the Time Attack stage, but if you're a novice player or not familiar with the game, using a standard type is better as it has screen-clearing smartbombs.

That's because nobody can afford the game to practice on it.

All scores were low. Ketsui - none of us had played it for 2 years. Both Mulletgeezer & I can go 1-ALL without fuss when we're not 2 years rusty.
Batrider - I played 1 practice Special Course run at high rank (no switchoff Hold Start) and got 5.9mil Stage 16. Then weirdly got offed in the comp (as I predicted - I'm a great believer in Sod's Law  ).

A big thanks to spadgy for the organisation, & a big thanks to the IC09 Organisers for the £100.

We're not a cliquey bunch, we just happen to already know each other from London arcade meets. You might find that the other forums are more cliquey than us.

You're expecting someone who's played the game for a total of 12 days over the past five years, to come out with a 120mil+ score?
That's asking a bit much, even for you. ;p

I think the generally laid-back attitude of the tourny might be responsible. None of us could really practice as the games on the rostrum changed a fair few times. Some people on the lists had never in seen the games in the real world before they sat down to have their credits!

As I recall other non shmup.com people were asked if they wanted to join the tourny but declined. The word is out that this event was bad ass and its crossed out side the online social circles of the core I.C.E team . You should get a lot more competition next time across all game types.

Nah, I was more or less assuming that at least two people out of a group of high level players would have had some experience with it. ;)
I'll bust mine out and see what I score on my first run after 2 years. I'm guessing 65 mil, but my max is like 105 and I only 1-ALL'ed it once,
about 2 days before my son was born.

You should've had some non-shooting games in the tournmanet. 1 puzzle, 1 platformer, for example.

The difference will be that you own the game, and have had a lot of practice and experience with it.
The rest of us... well... don't.

Like a few others, I've only played 3 credits of Ketsui, and they were also over 2 years ago, so that's why I did quite bad on it :D

If anything it was an interesting experiment in how the brain forgets the patterns over time. From 100mil 1-ALLs two years ago to less than half that.

I had the same problem when coming back to Border Down after a five year break. Lost all the patterns and positioning. Took over a week of study to get back to a low but competent level.

i hadn't played ketsui since i got the 100 mill+ 1-all 3-4 months ago and still didn't make it past 75 million.. think i only made it to the backwards section once and that was on my first credit of the second day

it took me 2 months to learn the game and probbly 2 months to forget it

Tell me about it  ! Ketsui is the kind of game where you have to just rinse and repeat without long breaks until you eventually reach the 2nd loop.
