Great MVS games that aren't shmups or beat 'em-ups?
Great MVS games that aren't shmups or beat 'em-ups?
So, I finally got an MVS 1 slot, and I'm really after some recommendations of games on the system that aren't shmups or fighters, inspired by how much I love 'Nam 1975.
I'm still interested in games with shooting or fighting - just not traditional scrolling shooters (as I know what ones of those I want), and not traditional 1v1 fighters (Scrolling fighters I like).
Any tips on some really fun stuff. Two player would be even better? I did a search for MVS in Off-Topic, and literally got nothing - perhaps the search function is down?
Thanks!

Overtop (driving game)
Metal Slug (kinda a shmup I guess)
Neo Turf Masters (amazing golf game)
Puzzle Bobble
Magical Drop 3 - great reflex based puzzle game.
Neo Driftout (driving game)
WindJammers (Really fun in 2p)
Street Hoop (NBA JAM ripoff)

Shock Troopers is killer. Plays kind of like Metal Slug in an overhead run-and-gun format. The scoring involves lots of milking, which as always isn't for everyone. But I like to just crank the difficulty to max and tear through it guns blazing. Great with friends too.

That sounds perfect. Me and the wife love 2-player topdown run-'n'-guns....
Thanks for the speedy replies and recommendations!

^Indeed! Great rowdy rock n' roll / dn'b to soundtrack the blasting. Excellent graphics too. The enemies' mannerisms and ridiculously OTT death animations are definitely in Metal Slug's league.
I quite like Nam 1975 as well. It's a Cabal / gallery shooter deal, simple but with tons of action. It's held up pretty well for being the first official Neo release (I'm fairly sure). Co-op is excellent, definitely a game that benefits from teamwork. The cinemas are pure unintentional comedy gold, too.

One important thing to note about Shock Troopers before tracking down a cart: there are two versions, which MAME calls Set 1 and Set 2. The former gives you one life per credit, the latter three (it evens out somewhat, since you take more damage in the three-life version).
I prefer the three-life revision; it's a lot more fun to strategically manage three characters in Team Battle mode, as opposed sharing one lifebar between them.

Totally agree, except maybe move the exclamation marks down to MD3. I don't play fighters, so these would be my top Neo Geo picks overall. Even if I had a 4-slot, I'd probably be content with just these three games (MD3 trumps MD2, so no need for that).charlie chong wrote:SHOCK TROOPERS !!!

Shock Troopers is way better than Shock Troopers 2. I have both, but rarely play the 2:nd. You get most points from enemies (they drop gems) if you kill them up close and personal with your knife.
Also, Top Hunter is lots of fun as well.

I'm a fan of spinmasters, bust a move again ex.
They are not too common though.

You might want to try Ninja Commando as well.spadgy wrote:Me and the wife love 2-player topdown run-'n'-guns....

Ninja Commando is good, but you may want to pack some autofire circuits at least for the first gothrough.
Nightmare in the Dark, Sengoku and Sengoku 2, Sengoku 3 (Sengoku 2001 in places supposedly), Zupapa.
Now I know these are fighters, but try Aggressors of Dark Kombat and Ninja Master's. Fantastic.

No, it's just that the search function on most forum software, including this one, blows. It just doesn't index words below a particular length.I did a search for MVS in Off-Topic, and literally got nothing - perhaps the search function is down?

I didn't realize this was MVS. Definitely this. I'd pick it up if I could find it somewhere.Damocles wrote:Nightmare in the Dark

The original made over a billion dollars in quarters, so there might be a few fans out there. It's reasonable to suggest it to somebody.
Re: Great MVS games that aren't shmups or beat 'em-ups?
I know, I was commenting on the "NBA ripoff" part.

With a kill yourself, - totally mature. They're only videogames man.

Re: Great MVS games that aren't shmups or beat 'em-ups?
This is brilliant everyone. It's still looking like Shock Troopers for me, and I think Topdown next...

Read this as "Christopher Hitchens" for some odd reason (read through this before). Time for bed then.
@ Escadrille:
Thanks for that trivia about Street Hoop - sure puts the height of and decline to the current state of the arcade scene in perspective.
Good choices all around in here, I will add that I was told (somebody around here will have to claim responsibility for this one) Shock Troopers 2nd Squad has better patterns or some such than the original. The lousy graphics and odd perspective on stuff (like the first or second boss - a bullet spam tank deal) pretty much ruins it for me though.
Another vote for Ninja Commando - so much better than ADK's first Ninja (blank) game on the MVS. SNK / ADK really loved the whole time travel plotline a bit too much though.
Nobody's mentioned it, and I'm not sure it's in the same league as most of the titles mentioned, but Ganryu / Musashi Ganryuki seemed like a good dumb time to me. Nothing terribly special, but competent enough Castlevania-like action. Aside from Spinmaster, Top Hunter, and Magician Lord, the Neo seems deficient of simple platformers (discounting Metal Slug).

It was NBA Jam that made that sum. I was taking kernow's work for it that Street Hoops has similar gameplay. I guess Elixir meant that Street Hoops isn't like NBA Jam, not that games of that nature suck.
