I'm purchasing a modded slim PS2 and I need the 411 on the some the best shmups on the ps2.

If you can play japanese games on there, then you need to get the Cave PS2 ports. This includes Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, ESP Galuda, Mushihime-sama, and Ibara. IMO those are the best shmups on PS2 (some of the best shmups PERIOD), so those should be priority one.
