What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
Heya. I'm doing a bit of a survey here & I need some help. It's for a local newspaper: I'm trying to gather information on what different people think of others in different parts of the world. If you can help, I'd appreciate it!
Oh, and if you don't mind, please state where you live (unless it's in your profile already)...
Area - Like / Fond of / Neutral / Not fond of / Dislike
American -
Canadian -
Korean -
Japanese -
Chinese -
Australian -
New Zealander -
Indian -
Iraqi -
Russian -
Mexican -
German -
Englishmen -
Italian -
Scottish -
Not gonna do a poll or anything like that, since this will probably need editing (I'm sure I've missed a few..). If you want to detail yourself as to why your preference, that would be great & it would help, although fairly time consuming.
Thanks guys.

Re: What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
I'm in Wales, and you can put Like against everyone for me
There are individuals and groups I'm not fond of and dislike, but nations - nah, that's simply too general.

I determine preferences based on individual characteristics, not over-reaching prejudices.
For the purposes of this survey, you can put down "Like" for all the countries.
I am from the eastern United States.

I hate most people equally no matter what race and like very few of them.

Re: What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
Not sure exactly what you mean here...i.e. what if one has nothing against people from China in general, but feels that the political regime there is deplorable? If you're looking for opinions on ethnic groups in general, I doubt you'll find very many people willing to openly say they dislike a specific bunch...
Re: What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
Is this a bias test based on ignorance or something? Because most folks on here are totally unqualified to speak about most of these countries, both in culture and in politics, myself included.
So I'd have to say I don't really think about these people in any positive or negative light. Even for Americans, you get the idea that they're more direct as a whole but I've seen enough folks who are passive that such a generalization seems pointless.

Re: What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
This type of thing is a really touchy subject, dude. You can't just go labeling people by their country. But that isn't to say I don't have recurring issues with people from certain places. But I'll try helping out regardless.
EDIT: HOLY FUCK TL;DR DID I REALLY WRITE ALL OF THIS?
America's government is (was?) a complete sham. I'd continue to be against it if it weren't for the new shift in government recently. It's too early to judge Obama and his intentions. As for Americans themselves, well, you're in NZ. You know what it's like. We've irrelevant in comparison to them, due to size. That's the first thing that everyone thinks about, country size, and not contributions themselves. It's pretty sad. Of course this is assuming they even know where and what New Zealand is. I've also had people tell me that I have an "invincible attitude" because I live in glorious NZ. Shit ain't pretty, I live in South Auckland. You know, that place that everyone rags on? Yeah. I'm just like you, except I live elsewhere. I've had people buy things (here) and spoken to me for years thinking that I was American.
I recently had a debate about how New Zealand's OFLC is introducing more and more censoring and soon, internet filtering. The thing is, none of us give a shit. We'll get around it. Hell, we got around it when everyone wanted to play Manhunt, which was banned. The best thing about that whole ordeal was that Manhunt sucked, but banning it here unintentionally made it even more desirable. Anyway, this debate. Apparently someone was defending America because their censorship laws are not publicly displayed online (lack of information to the public isn't exactly a good thing, even if it's disagreeable information) and yet ours are. Secondly, they're trying to compare America to fucking New Zealand. Who does that?
The majority of my online friends are Americans, though. I wouldn't bother with the Internet without them. I've noticed a trend though - when they get pissed, they'd rather ignore you completely, evade the subject, and pray that it isn't spoken about again - instead of trying to talk it through and deal with it that way. Fucking dumb. Canadians seem nicer in general, dunno why, it's just how it is. I'm very fond of Canadians for some reason. Possibly because I've only spent a month in Chicago, in comparison to 4 months in Saint Catharines.
I wish Aussies would stop shitting on Kiwis for no apparent reason. It's like this running gag that we're meant to be rivals, or something. Yeah, we're smaller, but we don't look up to you for anything. Wouldn't you Aussies say the same thing if America asked you that?
I like Japanese, except for one time when I was talking to my Japanese friend and I said that I'd like to visit there again, but the language barrier makes me feel isolated. He then asked if I was Korean. I said no. He went on to talk about how they hate Japan and actively promote racism in schools. Ironic, though. Give the anti-Korean shit up already, only you guys care about it. No experience with Koreans at all apart from online.
Chinese people are awesome, providing they aren't racist. Their government is about as messed up as America's though. I had a pretty cool Malaysian friend a few years ago. You neglected to mention Asia. Or Maoris. Or Samoans. Or Tongans. Come on, you're Samoan, how could you miss that? Well whatever, it isn't important.
The only people I have continuous issues with are indians in NZ. It's like, they're everywhere. In my customer service, up my electronics store, trying to buy my bike for the lowest possible price in the world. It's just frustrating. I have Indian neighbours who have horrendous, horrendous tastes in music, and they like to blast it all night. What is the point of music when all you hear is booming? And it isn't even good music, it's Slipknot, Nelly, Linkin Park, stuff like that.
Online gaming is another story completely, but there isn't much point in getting into that now. I've already said too much. I don't think you're ever going to be able to get a proper response by generalizations of countries (good job, neorichieb1971) because everyone has different views and it's ultimately just personal preference.

Finding survey respondents can be difficult as I know only too well. Therefore I'm happy to oblige. I've no desire to offend people as such explanations are left out. Your survey design is.... conflicting in some ways, be tactful with how you sample your target population. If you want reasoned explanations pm me and I will provide them.

Re: What are your influences of people from foreign countries?
You could argue that it is the governments of the countries that make our opinions. Which is defeating the objective of the question.
I lived in the USA for the best part of 6 years. I was treated just like their own and had a wonderful life out there. If it were not for my wife who shat on me from a great height. But the media and government (at the time) was absolutely atrocious. For me, I had to educate some of them that the evil in the world doesn't start the minute you leave US soil. Which many of them believed with their hand on their heart. Of course people here are open minded because they talk about a common interest and find ways to relate. But there are quite a few bible belt home owners in the midwest who believe they live in a holy land and everyone outside of the USA are just inferior or dangerous.
One lady I spoke to said she lived in the UK and didn't feel safe there and was glad to be back on USA soil. At the time a shooting was reported in St Louis on TV. The irony of it all.
Basically the question is related to how stereotypical countries are and how the people are seen. It is touchy, but instead of petitioning information on a shmups forum you really need to see it for yourself. Had I not lived in the USA, my outlook today would be very very different. There is nothing in life you can you can educate yourself on, without having first hand experience yourself. Because with any people, there are good and bad, the educated and the un-educated. But overall, I think a good 90% of any countries population are on the good side of sociable, loving, hospitable and friendly.

Super Laydock's meta view on this suject:
Good foreigners: like
Bad foreigners: dislike.
That said, I suppose everyone has certain prejudice and bias towards certain nationalities or populations.

I want to be a helpful poster but I can't find any people I dislike (particularly or otherwise) :C
I don't like hearing about people's weekend plans in online FPSes (being in an online FPS sort of defeats the whole weekend plans angle IMO). Why is it so much worse than face-to-face communication?!
Huge list of nationalities I've had online dealings with, 99% of whom feel they know how the US of A works. Actually that reminds me the time when some guy from Finland started talking in a DoD:S game about how the British were out to get us. Good times.

Its not wise to generalize about people, but I guess you can identify some general things about...
American - America is the World. There is nothing outside the borders of the US.
US Government - Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. JFK, Moon Landings, 9/11 - not good.
Canadian - Dunno - they say 'about' differently -> 'abewt'.
French Canadian ->See the French.
Korean - Southerners are friendly. Very Spicy food in bowls.
Japanese - Working 9am to 12pm. Honour. Seeking perfection of movement. Cruel. Friendly. Weird. Xenophobic. Hide things that you don't want to hear behind their language.
Chinese - Hard working. Decent.
Australian - Fine
New Zealander - Fine except for the time a Kiwi pub landlord got weird with me
Indian - Nation of Dowry Murderers. Love of money. Seeking high education. Not liable to mug or burglarize you.
Iraqi - Typical Arab superiority complex. Don't spit on their backs. I like the Christian Iraqis.
Russian - Strong women - mentally - beautiful when young - no so much when old.
Mexican - Hard working.
German - Best quality engineers in the world. Precise on timing. Sometimes arrogant.
Englishmen - English girls have attitude - I avoided dating them. English men - not so different from Australians and Kiwis - ok.
UK Government - Almost as dodgy as the US Govt.
Italian - Big egos "I am ItALian!" - I have no problem with this. Friendly and hospitable. Be careful when considering doing business with them. Absolutely STUNNING Country, beautiful.
Scottish - Proud and Brave. Separatist yet running my Country, which is odd when you think about it.

There is one trait, and only one trait, I HATE from people from a certain country that starts with a "C": Whenever I deal with them at work, they behave and rant as if everybody owed them a favor, and even make up irrational stories on the spot because they think everybody is trying to screw them at the slightest opportunity. WTF?
There. Thanks.
