PSP Firmware 1.5 R.I.P?
Looks like the 1.5 gap might be closing sooner than we thought. Check out the section on psp launcher updates.

Rage Against the Machine is a FAR CRY from death metal. If you don't know the difference, you shouldn't comment on such things.Dylan1CC wrote:Did you see the spanish video of the dude playing Link to the Past on his PSP? Neat but pretty cheasy, had some sort of Rage against the machine/death metal song that the video was themed to. haha
And if that was just a snide remark from someone who IS knowledgable about music to know the difference, please forgive me. I simply get tired of hearing people talk about hard/heavy music with comments like that marrying disparate styles.
I know guys like you and I know the difference, but many people have this perception of death metal and think that anything even remotely heavy must be death metal. They also talk about "cookie monster" vocals, which bugs me. I mean, there are several different vocal stylings that have accompanied death metal bands. Compare Six Feet Under, Carcass, Bal Sagoth, and Obituary - those are all quite different.sethsez wrote:As a death metal fan, I really don't give a shit. I knew what he meant. The point is, it just gets old hearing people talk about heavy music like they know what they're talking about when they really have no idea.
Now that was hilarious.8 1/2 wrote:Walley wound the family... with a pocket full of Rupees.
It sounds cool, but as I understand it you have to swap memory cards everytime you want to play an emu right? That's a bit of a pain. I'll have to wait till payday to try this out then, as I only have one card. Time for an upgrade regrardless. How big are those PC-Engine roms running anyway?

My Trying Not To
So what is the status of this right now? I WILL buy one of these things if I can run SNES and Genesis roms at full speed, but am I going to have to worry about Sony closing the loophole?

Eugenics: you know it's right!
Just because they're different doesn't mean they can't fall under "cookie monster vocals." They're all different examples of the vocal style (Bal Sagoth sticking out the most due to all the straightfoward narration), and I like some more than others (Akerfeldt is probably my most hated modern death vocalist just because of how many people kiss his ass for such an underwhelming performance), but they're still all the same style. Music does not need a brand new label for every single singer and vocalist out there because they all have their own unique approach and sound (of course, this is my biggest beef with pretentious metalheads, who insist that any slight deviation from a genre or style is now a brand new genre comprised of five hypenated words).FRO wrote:I know guys like you and I know the difference, but many people have this perception of death metal and think that anything even remotely heavy must be death metal. He didn't go on a long rant about the various styles of death metal. He made an offhand comment about metal he heard in a PSP video (which was the point of his post) and used the wrong term. Do you tread on eggshells when you talk about jazz, rap, classical, country, or whatever else for fear of using the wrong sub-genre and pissing off an overzealous fan? Get over it.The point is, it just gets old hearing people talk about heavy music like they know what they're talking about when they really have no idea.

I too would like to know this info.CMoon wrote:So what is the status of this right now? I WILL buy one of these things if I can run SNES and Genesis roms at full speed, but am I going to have to worry about Sony closing the loophole?
Heh, I would be able to rationalize picking one of these up immediately if I thought that later on they'd be less hackable

I've only tried SNES and PC-Engine so far.
I haven't come across any games (shooters in particular) for SNES that run at full speed yet.
R-Type III is *almost* there using the 333 MHz CPU clock speed, but the music is still slow.
However, PC-Engine emulation works like magic, a couple of games seem to be at full speed on 266 MHz clock speed, and a lot more run at full speed at 333 MHz clock, and the sound seems pretty accurate also. It's worth it for PC-Engine alone, being a shmup machine and all.
I haven't tried Genesis yet since it looks like speed is not quite there, and sound support is rudimentary at best.
I'm sure we can expect updates to happen quickly though, so now is still a great time to buy a PSP if you don't have one already!

I realize he didn't go on a rant, I was just venting a bit (preaching to the choir) to a fellow metalhead. Personally, I don't worry about "eggshells" as you say, because I like all those styles of music as well. And I do agree with you on the whole "slight deviation" thing (Rhapsody labeling themselves "Epic Hollywood Metal" to differentiate themselves from the rest of the power metal bands is over the top, even for them) - it does seem that there are so many sub-genres of metal it's ridiculous. I'm one of those people that when I first heard Nirvana thought it was just a different sound of metal (hard and heavy guitar, screaming vocals - it was metal to me).sethsez wrote:He didn't go on a long rant about the various styles of death metal.
