The Definitive Next-Gen console for Disc-based Shmups?

Post by ST Dragon »

As far as I know, the PS-2 was the Shoot Em Up king in the previous console line up, GameCube 2nd, DC 3rd & Xbox 4th (Maybe even less… ;) )

However, I’ve lost track of the current next-gen console wars.
So, Out of the 3 contenders (PS-3, Xbox360 & Wii), which is the definitive console for 2D Shoot Em Ups, in disc/media based form at the moment, rather than download services?

Oh By the way, do they still produce shooters & games in general for the Dreamcast, or is it finally long dead? Incredibly, that thing has been refusing to die since 2001!

And last but not least, is Gradius VI going to be released for the PS-3 as it was rumored back in 2005-6?

On the subject of Dreamcast's status, Rumor has it that GD-ROM production was totally halted in 2007, and AFAIK no new GD-ROM games (for e.g. Naomi or Chihiro) have been released in the past year. There are still unlicensed games under development.

Last I heard of Gradius VI was that it was "indefinitely postponed" or similar, but I can't find a source saying that, just stuff from 2007 saying that it was "not canceled".

How do you figure that the GC beats the DC in terms of shooters?

360 is way ahead at the moment, followed by Wii. PS3 has nothing.

Yeah the DC has more shooters than GC, but I'm not sure if it should be even placed in the same gen as PS-2, Xbox & GC. It was dead by 2001...

Not in Japan it wasn't, and that's really where the Shmups matter most. It stayed a popular system until at least 2004 which easily competes with GC.

Interesting. Similar story as the Saturn...
Was the DC in production until 2004 in Japan & was it supported by new game releases until 2004, or both?

The all mighty PS-3 has absolutely no Shooters?

By the way, has any one posted a list of the X360 & Wii shooters, similar to an old shmup list for the PS-2? I remember being posted & updated here some time back.

So, my best bet would be to buy a Japanese Xbox360...

Games came out officially until 2007 (think Under Defeat was the last official). Independent games still came out last year, and there is still one more on the way.

System was still sold in Japan until '06, but I would imagine a lot of that was existing stock. Probably stopped production shortly before that.

I know 360 has Otomedius Gorgeous
Wii has Castle Shikigami 3

Why not count downloadable ones though?
360 has Ikaruga and Geometry Wars
PS3 has Super Stardust, Everyday shooter
Wii has a bunch in the virtual console

Neo Geo CDZ and CD-i, you have your Aero Fighters, you got your Pulstar, and the CD-i has Tetsuo Geiden covered. What else do you need in life?

PC-FX and Jaguar, you have your Tempest 2000, you got your Zeroigar, and the Jaguar also has Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy covered. What else do you need in death?

What an eternal suffering

The j360 has won the shmup war in this generation, like or like it not. Get a j360 or get the PCBs but please people shut up the whining!
The future is 2D
