The State Complete Series DVD, or: I Hate Copyright Law

Anyone have memories of this excellent show? It makes me sad how many friends haven't seen it who would have totally appreciated it, although I was 10 or 11 when I was staying up late on school nights to watch it so I guess it kind of makes sense for anyone in my age group. Most of the show's target audience are into their 30's now, as this was 94-95. I doubt it had any following outside of the US either.

Well, today is the official release date of "The State: The Complete Series DVD" which is going on Amazon and ebay and such for around 40 US dollars. In a perfect world this would be all that fans of the show could have asked for. But there's one thing that slips a lot of people's minds when remembering the show, which is the same reason a re-release was in limbo for so long; music. It makes sense for a sketch show on MTV to be full of popular music, and the State had tons. Buying the rights back to all the original music might have been possible but certainly not profitable. I thought maybe at least a few of the more obscure songs would have made it into this, but it sounds like the show was almost entirely rescored. Half of the appeal of the show would have been the 90's nostalgia, so really this is only half the package for most fans.

I guess new fans who wanted to see what the show was about won't even know the difference. I just wish there was some way this show could be considered "historically significant" or something and be able to waive some of the copyright issues that way. Anyways I just wondered if you guys had fond memories of the show, what your favorite skits were, or even why you thought it sucked/was overrated, whatever.

I'm gonna dip my balls in it!

I loved this show when it was on. That sucks about the music. This also happened to Tour of Duty, which was one of my favorites as a kid. I have vivid memories of that show's intro with Paint It Black playing. On the DVD releases, all of the music, including the introduction, has been changed.
Feedback will set you free.

I got Best Buy to price match Amazons and went ahead and bought the set. Not having the original music truly sucks but my fond memories of the show proved to be too much. At only 35$ I don't think I will regret it. The extras are pretty extensive if your into that sort of thing.

That is indeed pretty shitty. It's not just series releases either; I put up a trailer from an old games disc (the Mobius trailer) and the huge media conglomerate that owns the shitty rap on it (which I'm sure had permission back in the day) has gotten the video blocked in most parts of the world (so I'm told). Ironically a bunch of other people took my upload and didn't credit it, but got more views off it than I did. Share and share alike, I say?

The short lived parody comedy series called "The Edge" with Wayne Knight was over the top back in the early 1990s. ^_~

"The Job" parody series was cool with Denis Leary...the second season was aburptly cancelled in lieu of the 9/11 incident.

For basically the same reason, most TV stations don't show It's a Wonderful Life anymore. It was believed to be public domain, but copyrights were asserted over the soundtrack and over the storyline (via the novel that it was adapted from).

IMO, copyright terms are way too long. This brief explains why the current US/EU term is ridiculous (short version: future discounting means that sales 80 years from now have trivial value today), and I think the reasoning can be extended to much shorter terms when you think about the fact that the revenue tends to decrease quickly with time, often to zero within a few years for works that aren't especially popular. Even for popular works, it's common for sales to drop by over 90% within a few months of release.

So you're saying 9/11 didn't happen? Best news all day!

Ex-Cyber: Thanks for the link...I hadn't thought about the discounting angle before, but it makes perfect sense.
