Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance movie...seen it yet?
So how is this newfangled "Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance" movie? Considering that it just recently came out on the big screen in Japan on June 27th, 2009, which was six days ago. ^_~
Is it as good as the two films of "The End of Evangelion" & "Death & Rebirth" of Neon Genesis Evangelion"? Those two were quite cryptic to begin with and begs the viewer to want to learn more.

Re: Evangelion 2.0 You can (not) Advance movie...
Anno and company are going to continue to milk that franchise to kingdom come, and the fans who are convinced that every little thing that happens in the anime must have some pre-planned, intentional meaning (even the stuff that contradicts itself) will continue to throw money at them in hopes of finally getting "the answers."
Granted, I rather like Evangelion, as it's one of the few anime series that I've ever been remotely "into," and I don't even mind some of the revamping they've been doing, considering the budget limitations of the original production, but things have still been pretty ridiculous on that front for some time, and show no signs of slowing down.
And no, I ain't seen the movie.

Haven't seen it, but FUNimation is releasing the first Rebuild movie here and hopefully the next ones too.

That's good to hear that FUNmation will be releasing it (first Rebuild movie) shortly here in the USA. Will they be releasing it on DVD and Blu-Ray format as well?

how was 1.0?
I loved this series. I actually went reading through the dead sea scrolls text looking for clues. I know, all this is supposed to just be a "distraction", but it's so much fun.
For example: I learned that the old testament really says that the world was once inhabited by 'giants' that were sons of angels. Religious scollars claimed for a long time that this was a figure of speach.
Then they found the dead sea scrolls, that has the exact story, but says "500 Ft Giants".

I like Eva, and the trailer looks cool, but Gainax is reaching Square-Enix levels of remake mania. How many versions are there of the same basic story?
* The TV series.
* The director's cut of the TV series.
* The first movies.
* The manga.
* The other manga.
* The OTHER manga.
* The "three years later" light novels.
* The new movies.
They've definitely never heard of the phrase "too much of a good thing."

Evangelion = worst thing that ever happened to Gainax. Gunbuster, FLCL, and the like are what they should be doing.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

If you like FLCL, check out Diebuster. More of the same lunacy.

And not a single decent Evangelion game to date, to boot.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Re: Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance movie...seen it yet?
The only thing I liked about Evangelion was End of Evangelion. Pretty much the equivalent of Anno taking a huge shit on his fans, and amazing because of it.
Re: Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance movie...seen it yet?
The remakes are a waste of fucking time. Saw the first remake, and it's noting but reusing the animation from the TV series, change a few things around, and add in Pizza Hut and Doritos product placements.
I miss the days of MD Geist and the BGC OVAs. I really hate the new shit with a passion.

To the best of my knowledge the "he made it to tick off the fans" story is false - if memory serves "End" was how he originally wanted to finish the series, but since they ran out of money he ended up doing the cut-rate wonky last two TV episodes instead. Once the merchandising cash started rolling in he went back and did things how he originally intended.MX7 wrote:The only thing I liked about Evangelion was End of Evangelion. Re: Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance movie...seen it yet?
I think both versions of the end of the cartoon series pissed off the fans a lot. I mean come on; it starts off as a cheery cartoon about a boy and his robot and his chums. Sure they''re all a bit emo, but the inference is that they'll all develop as characters. They just get more and more depressed as the series goes on, the plot goes batshit insane, the big robots start eating each other, Shinji has a wank over his comatose 14 year old object of affections, gets off with his surrogate mother, EVERYBODY DIES and all life in the universe is destroyed. I mean yeah, I agree he prob had it worked out from the start (although he was hit by a pretty nasty bout of depression halfway through production) but to see 'End' as anything but the narrative equivalent of a concealed link to goatse.jpg? Naaaaaaaah.BulletMagnet wrote:To the best of my knowledge the "he made it to tick off the fans" story is false - if memory serves "End" was how he originally wanted to finish the series, but since they ran out of money he ended up doing the cut-rate wonky last two TV episodes instead. Brilliant series by the way. As long as you get past the first 19 odd episodes as quickly as possible.

Re: Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance movie...seen it yet?
Yeah, I just saw it this Wednesday, 1,000 yen on the first of the month baby!
It was quite entertaining and high budget for Japan. Like 1.0 the product placement is pretty ridiculous. Lawson, Yebisu, etc....
Compared to the first new movie, 1.0, the new one diverges from the original story quite a bit. 1.0 felt like more of a re-telling of the original tv show story while 2.0 feelsl like it's becoming something a bit different. It's quite strange because it's the same basic storyline as the TV show but I felt like they were purposely tweaking events and characters just for the sake of keeping fans on edge.
The new American Eva pilot is introduced but she seemed a little out of place. Overall I really enjoyed both of the new movies but at the same time it was little strange that the story was somewhere between a remake and a brand new story. I think they would be better off going for a completely new story or a completely faithfull remake and not this weird gray area in between.
Let me know if you guys want me to start spoiling some stuff

I like how you can go to a Lawson's or Japanese 7-11 and buy the latest game right on the spot. The only place that you can buy console games in a retail store setting that is open 24hrs a day is at your local Wal-Mart for the USA. ^_~scrilla4rella wrote:Yeah, I just saw it this Wednesday, 1,000 yen on the first of the month baby!

Here's a pre-order for the upcoming Mari Makinami figure (the new American EVA pilot that you mention of) from the new Evangelion 2.0 movie courtesy of Wave:

Actually, 7-11 now carries console games too, at least the ones in my area. They're limited to the big-name releases and appear to be mostly or exclusively X360 titles, but it's still kind of cool to see them there. It would be better if they would put the Shadow Dancer and SF2 cabs back in, though.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: I like how you can go to a Lawson's or Japanese 7-11 and buy the latest game right on the spot. No. I cannot stand Evangelion, or most other anime. I find it weak.
I do, however, enjoy some manga. Especially Berserk, which I find captivating.

I'm thinking of buying the series, as it's not too expensive and looks nice. I'm not into anime at all... Is this a good place to start? What release should I buy? The perfect? Platinum? How is the PQ/subs?
Thanks for the input.

^ Ah come on.
Berserk, while dealing with manly men, amongst MANY other things, is extremely well written.
When I mean weak, I mean in narrative, story telling and character design.

Well yeah pretty much.
I can't think of Evangelion any more without thinking of rob's ikaruga video when he says something like "THEY JUST THROW A BUNCH OF PRETENTIOUS CRAP ON THE SCREEN". That's pretty much Evangelion. Asuka is delicious though.
Of course, the real secret behind Evangelion's characters is that they just took the 3 stereotypical mech pilot personalities and gender swapped them.

Offhand the Platinum thin pack tends to be the one that comes most recommended overall.KindGrind wrote:I'm thinking of buying the series, as it's not too expensive and looks nice. I thought the commercials for it, just like every other Eva commercial under God's green Earth, was for a new pachinko game.

I like Berserk. It's a happy story about a Zack cosplayer and some guy who's so nice he'd never feed his friends to demons.

If anything, Zack is an imitation of Guts (Berserk has been on going since 1990) but ya, if you want to blame something for the legion of big sword using characters from Nippon, blame Berserk.BryanM wrote:I like Berserk. 20 years and still going, and still can't get an animated version to adapt it all. They could get years out of it without needing filler. Probably all the unfamily-friendly hugging going on.No_not_like_Quake wrote:BryanM wrote:If anything, Zack is an imitation of Guts (Berserk has been on going since 1990) but ya, if you want to blame something for the legion of big sword using characters from Nippon, blame Berserk.
I suppose there is a possibility you're not familiar with this (to some annoying) phenomenon?
