Not sure if anyone knows (or cares for that matter!) but you can download the games from the MechCommander series for free (legally) from:

I've only played MC2 but it's really good, fans of mechs or battletech or tactics games should definitely check it out!

MechCommander is great. I usually skip Tactics games, but that and Jagged Alliance 2 are the only PC games in the genre (real-time or turn-based) I actually enjoy going back to playing.

I preferred the first MechCommander game, I know its more heavily dated the MC2 but the level design just seems more refined.

If you want to be hardcore and roll for initiative and shit, there's Megamek, an electronic version of the classic BattleTech wargame that MechWarrior/MechCommander/MechAssault are based on. I haven't touched it in a couple of years, but I used to play pretty heavily online.

Wait what? Doesn't Microsoft still own BattleTech?

And Mechcommander 2 won't run on my ol' Win98 laptop, BOO

Microsoft no longer owns any of it. Smith and Tinker bought the IP rights to it after MS closed down FASA studio.

I played both MechCommanders before and I too think the first one is better. But no matter how hard I tried, I never got past the first few levels in the first game. Your mechs are too weak and die quickly to the Clan ones. Not sure if I suck or if this game is harder than usual (maybe the former).

I prefer http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/de ... esktop.php

For some reason seeing the word "Commander" in a game title reminded me of this video that I haven't seen in YEARS. Also the text size thing was changed?

Hey, thanks for the heads up!

I loved these games. I was actually looking for my copy the other day. I think I must have lost it.

If you have vista like me (boo hiss) and have problems getting the original game to run, just copy and paste the entire contents of the .iso into a suitable file on your HD, and then run the .exe. It should work fine as none of the files on the disk are compressed.
