Oh, I should mention that the legendary

Bio

FORCE

APE

is in development now and will be shipping (hopefully) as real NES compatible cartridges. Maybe within the year; haven't checked. Info on that is at the Retrogaming Roundtable.

Does that strange Chinese BIOHAZARD "remake" for the Famicom have a place in your list?

There's a ton of homebrew stuff for the 2600 and much of it quality too. Stuff like a 2600 port of Lady Bug, a very well done version of Caverns of Mars called Conquest of Mars (different from the version in the Atari Flashback 2), a marble maze game with multiple levels and some of the best music on the system that uses two paddles (one set) for the controls (Marble Craze), a pseudo 3D game based on the arcade game Star Fire, a very well done port of Thrust, and more.

The 7800 just started getting some homebrews. Unfortunately, most consist of games based on arcade games (which I felt was 7800's weakness. Well done ports from GCC that stand on their own, but not many standout games that aren't arcade ports). Most of these are well done, though, with nice ports of Burgertime (Beef Drop), Q*Bert (b*nq), Asteroids Deluxe (complete with vector style graphics and a sweet easter egg that I found by accident due to an emulator glitch. Actually a hack, but a well done one), Space Duel (also has nice graphics made to look like the vector style. Well done port, which is also a hack of the 7800 Asteroids, but is missing the arcade Space Duel's coolest feature, the tether modes), Super Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man (so far only released in limited amounts on the AtariAge forum, but the binary is available from Atari Age), and the Pac-Man Collection (hacked Ms. Pac-Man with a ton of extras, a port of Pac-Man, and tweaks to make Ms. Pac-Man closer to the arcade).

I heard the Vectrex also has some very nice homebrews (which like the 2600, also got a homebrew version of Thrust).

There have been quite a few (at least relatively speaking) C64 games released on cartridge lately, including a couple of mine and the rather spiffy Shotgate (sort of an attempt to do Portal in 2D).

Whatever became of that NES GTA3 remake? C&D'd out of existence, I take it?

Also, I might as well add Qax, a ducks-themed Amiga puzzle / platformer (single screen) that got a limited GBA cart release lately.

Hadn't seen that Bio Force Ape flyer before, that's gotta be a FC original or somethin' O_o

It just sort of fell through i think... it's probable that the developer just ran out of free time, writing anything homebrew is time consuming and 8-bits have even larger overheads.

You mean Qwak by Jamie Woodhouse and it was originally a BBC Micro game; Jamie's also done a PC version of the thing now and his latest release, ironically, is Zap, a shoot 'em up he wrote for the BBC in the 1980's that has been tidied up and released through Retro Software - i played it a month or so back and rather liked it.

Just out of interest... what definition of "homebrew" are we using here, the catch all for backroom coded software or the more exclusive one that i believe Atari Age use which requires a real media release?

Thanks for the corrections. It looks like we've all been assuming the latter.

I spoke with ProgrammingAce (the guy doing Bio Force Ape, aka "Paul B.") and that Bio Force Ape pic is a scan from an old Famitsu. Good art but I think they've got a new cover :/ Game should still be tight though; they mainly need some music however.

I didn't know Qwak wasn't an Amiga original. It's a brilliant game. I even exchanged some e-mails with mr. Woodhouse regarding how fantasticly good I find Qwak to be
