Well, I just got my copy of DOJ today, and I just got done playing it moments ago. I can say after only about a half hour of play time, I love this game. I have DP for PSX and DDP on MAME and I can honestly say this is my favorite out of the three. I don't know what it is, but the way the bullet patterns are and the enemies come, I just love it.
I wasn't expecting to like it THAT much. I was also not expecting to get as far as I was.

This is not how we do things on the shmups.com forum (we actually reduce lives down to 1 and turn it up to hard). But seriously if you speak of clearing a game, people assume defaults.Metal Gear Okt wrote:[

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to brag, i was just giving my impressions of what seems to be a fairly controversial game around here. Next time I'll be a little more clear about what I'm trying to say before i post.Rob wrote:This is not how we do things on the shmups.com forum (we actually reduce lives down to 1 and turn it up to hard). Same to me.captain ahar wrote:i love DOJ. i can't do anything with it though, i can't even 1-life through stage 1 all the time these days, and i've only gotten as far as the beginning of stage 3. and at $40-45 it was a right deal as well.

I myself like ESPgaluda more tha DOJ. May be it is just more enjoyable for someone at my current skill level.

Oh shit! I actually got DDP DOJ around four days ago, but finally managed to play it round my friends house yesterday.
Man, DOJ ROCKS!!!! I played it for around an hour, and barely made it through to the second stage boss, before game over. My friend couldn't believe how hard it was, and kept saying it's unfair. I hate to admit it, DOJ kicked my ass.... And I loved every second of it. I know it sounds crazy but it's true man. I just kept wanting to play more of it.
When I decide to either get a Jap or Modded PS2 of my own, with more play time one day I hope I'll give DOJ some ass kicking of my own (I hope).
But yeah, I saw this thread and had to post. One hour into playing and so far I love DOJ.

I've got a small TV that looks tate-able but I ain't testing it out on that. Not if if it won't be bigger than yoko on my normal TV.
by the way any tips for chaining stage 1 up to the sub-boss? I keep quitting whenever I break my chain before I get to the sub-boss. I hate having under 3 million when the first stage ends.

it will look better and either less blurry (yoko-anti) or less downright butt ugly (yoko) just turn your head sideways to see how it will be :pgs68 wrote:I've got a small TV that looks tate-able but I ain't testing it out on that. Not if if it won't be bigger than yoko on my normal TV.
there's an issue i have with DOJ, on my two small TVs tate mode isnt fullscreen (still very playable) and "tate hosei" is scaled or fake low res or whathever its called (you know, the ripples on scrolling objects)
is that normal? when in tate on a big TV its fullscreen.
holy shit!!Metal Gear Okt wrote:I loved...LOVED DDP. Probably my second favorite shmup after Ikaruga. It just feels like it's harder to combo in DOJ while on the whole the game is easier. My second time through i beat it on two credits.

i was jus browsing thru the thread but that really caught my attention, man you must be a real natural.. i think this game is fucking HARD on a good day ill get to stage 4 on one credit, watching me clear it gives new meaning to the term "credit feeding"

tho im not really a big fan of i neither, not much for the scoreing system in either DDPs..

regular Tate is too big for my screen. it cuts off the score on the top or the bomb indicator on the bottom, no matter how much i adjust my screen. The vagrant wrote:it will look better and either less blurry (yoko-anti) or less downright butt ugly (yoko) just turn your head sideways to see how it will be :pgs68 wrote:I've got a small TV that looks tate-able but I ain't testing it out on that. i wind up playing it in "Tatei Hosei" while laying on my side on the couch.
What do you consider the "sub-boss" in Stage 1? Are you talking about the big turret that tanks come out of it? All I can really say is to focus on the bees, memorize where there are and when to get them. After that, just watch the super-play. I must have watched it 50 times while trying to learn stage 1.gs68 wrote: by the way any tips for chaining stage 1 up to the sub-boss? not sure if its the same in the ps2 version, but on the pcb's attract mode when it shows the first level, the demo chains to the 'sub-boss'. i forget how it does it, but it ends up somewhere over 200 there i think. ive figured out a way to semi get to there consistently. What do you consider the "sub-boss" in Stage 1? i just stay with the first rows of tanks for a while until some helis come down and use those to move across and get the powerup, then do some sparse shooting until the first big ship comes out. after that if i have some tanks left over i can use those to keep the chain up, if not i usually end the chain there, im too slow to get the bees after it and the helis take too long to come down for me. if you get past the big ship its pretty easy from there, just remember the way the next medium sized ships come out and the bee and you can chain through to the next powerup ship. after that it seems like luck of the draw for me, sometimes i can continue it but usually dont.
as long as i get a hyper im happy. i use it on the boss and usually end up with 1.5-2 million hit bonus with it (usually ~5 mil total i think), and if i did things right, get 3 quick hypers and a 4th a little into level 2, 5th for the last section, and sometimes another one right before the boss.
I really wish I could explain it to you. Figuring out that part was the first major step in learning to chain in this game for me. I remember struggling with it for a while before it clicked. Again, just keep watching the superplay and be especially observant of the way he collects bees. It's not about speed. It's about timing.

Ok, last try
You play the PS2 version and clear the game with 1 credit but composed of 6 lifes instead of 3. Is it correct?
And if playing with a credit of 6 lifes you beat the game using only 3 lifes you will consider it a normal 1CC, right? Ok, my opinion is different. If you play with non default setting than your score/performance is not comparable with others.
Sorry but sometimes my english is crappy...

No, I understand what you're saying.
The most ships you can set is 5 in arcade mode. So, if i clear it with 6, that's still 2 credits. If i clear it with 5, however, that's still technically a 1cc.
What I'm saying is that I see that as an accomplishment by itself. For me, I don't need to put in the effort to go from 5 to 3 to feel satisfied.
