I dunno, the 14 hit combos never seemed all that powerful in SSIV. I never bothered with them.

They're not crazily overpowered, but if you have them down and can set them up properly they can really shift the balance of gameplay. Nothing next to v-ism, though.

SS2 for Hyper Neo Geo 64 is really cool as well.
never got a chance to play SS64
As mentioned there's a seller in the UK who picked up the remaining HNG64 stock after the SNK bankruptcy. Systems are absolutely dirt cheap, and the games are very solid. SS64 plays essentially just like SSIV, with the addition of sidesteps and new characters. While the 3D models are dated, the backgrounds and visual design is absolutely gorgeous. FF:WA, though not as good as SS, is also very enjoyable. Buriki One is quite experimental, you control movement with the buttons and attacks with the stick.

All in all a HNG64 is well worth it for any SNK fan, imo.

Anything with a super-combo-meter pretty much forces the gameplay to revolve around unleashing those super attacks.

I'm not necessarily opposed to what amounts to one-hit matches, but I do favor the Bushido Blade philosophy over many-hit super combos.

Finally getting into this series. Getting to whack people with an umbrella drew me into checking out SS3 on the Saturn. The music is phenomenal on this port, and is almost totally live. Of course, the game is excellent and I love hitting people around with Shizumaru.

I MAME'd the others in the series, and they all look fun. I guess I am just weird - I found 3 to be the prettiest and the most fun to play, though they are all excellent. I liked the powerful attacks and quick matches. The graphics are fantastic, and I felt that IV was not as polished in that and the audio department. I'm sure hardcore fans will say IV plays better, but in terms of the overall package, III really shines.

I love everything about SS3 and look forward to getting into the series more! I plan to pick up the anthology at some point.

Just for the record, SFA3 is inferior to SFA2. (Thread derail! :P )
okay kid, this is a crazy late reply, and yeah OT, but I have to disagree.

My personal preference actually happens to be Alpha 2 due to familiarity, nostalgia, and balance. However, even I have to admit A3 is the superior game in most regards.

When comparing the 2 games, I don't really see V-ism as a valid complaint. Alpha 2 relies just as heavily on Custom Combos as 3, except they're way easier to pull off and can be activated at Level 1. Get stuck in a combo in A3, you can at least pray for an escape. A level 1 hit in A2 is practically 50-80% guaranteed, and I swear its like the meter is activated every 10 seconds or less.

Plus V-Sakura is one of my all time favorite fighting game characters, along with ST Dhalsim and A-groove Rolento, she rules the school! A2 sak does come close though.

Samurai Shodown was the first arcade game I could 1cc. The arcade I used to play at was right next to the grocery store my mom went to and every weekend when she went shopping I'd go and pump quarters into the Neo to play Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters '94. Good times...

Well, I bought the anthology for PS2. What a steal at that budget price, and what a great series!
