Strange arcade platformer recommendations?

Post by Sandlegs »

I am just looking for a break from shooters for a few days and am looking for any weird, kind of off arcade games. I already have things like snackson jackson, pipi and bibis, and trio the punch. Anything you can think of that would be enjoyable would be awesome.

It's relatively well-known, but PuLiRuLa is some scary shit. edit: it's a beat 'em up though.

If you want some crazy Japanese style wackiness in a four-player brawler, then Irem's Ninja Baseball Bat Man would be right up your alley. It features very colorful and lavishly hand-drawn sprite fest including some crazy background scenery as well. This particular game really doesn't take itself too seriously either. ^_~

You just might get lucky in scoring one, Lordstar. There was one not too long ago here for sale on the Trading section of Shmups.org but I didn't pounce on it at the time. Some other lucky fella scored it instead. ^_~

Got charm, but really not that good in it's old age though.

Psychonics OSCAR. Weirdo Data East platformer with Gradius style powerups. Haven't played it in a while, but recall it being unique.

Toki by TAD is absolutely brutality in the words of Billy Mitchell. One of the hardest games I've ever played.

That's all I got for pure platformers from my collection that I felt were worthy of mention.

When Fabtek distributed Toki for the USA arcades, it got a very limited distribution back in the early 1990s. One of my local arcades was fortunate enough to get one in stock. Yes, it is insanely hard to the point having to credit-feed it just to advance to the next stage. ^_~

Are there any Toki VHS superplays out there in the wild?

I fuckin' love Toki. It's like a harder version of Shinobi, but with a monkey. In fact, when I was a kid, the corner store had Toki and Shinobi side by side (next to Rampage -- hell yeah), and I would always play Toki when I wanted to take a break from Shinobi. Yeah right!

Billy Mitchell really said that? It's actually a pretty easy game...

Agreed. I saw kids around 12-15 beat it back in the 90's. Toki, I mean.

Okay, so it's 100% platforming and also 100% careful combat :D

SMB and Toki ruined my expectations of what "platforming" was...

Agreed w/Skykid that Hammerin' Harry ain't the top game out there...replace with the E-SWAT games perhaps.

Also the Rolling Thunder games and...whatever the name of that Konami Rolling Thunder-alike in space is called (the one with space trivia, lol).

I was paraphrasing. I'm not sure what my PCB is set on, but whatever setting it is, is no joke. I have the Genesis version but haven't played it much. Maybe it is much easier. As PC Engine Fan X said, its hard to the point of having to credit feed just to advance one level. I remember playing it at an indoor soccer complex here. They had Toki and Buster Bros. side by side. I used to get dominated on those two games constantly but kept coming back for more. I really like all the TAD games. I think I own them all except Cabal.
