A Windows ME machine survived 9 years?! :o
With how many complete OS reinstallations (or more likely "System Restore" uses)?

I had a broken and pirated XP installation on our ME box in no more than five years. Turns out it had bad RAM of course. Part of me wants to do something with that machine - 1.2 GHz Athlon, pretty nice at one time (certainly seemed very fast when we got it, coming right off a 500MHz Pentium III). Probably should just donate it somewhere already, of course.

Dayum. I've posted a few times from a Win98 laptop, won't be beating that unless I can figure out how to post from my HP-95lx or a Japanese computer

Is that a SX or DX revision?

PHPBB3 doesn't allow the quote vortex. That one could go either way.

Icarus wrote:As far as I know, the archaic phpBB2 setup doesn't allow much flexibility, as it is still based around the old HTML table structure that was prevalent not long after Y2K. As a result, it is extremely hard to add new features to it, as you often have to edit core HTML in order to implement these features, and if you're using customised templates (like this eight-year old Space Pilot 3K template) it's impossible. Forum software nowadays runs with CSS-P and XHTML.
It's actually not hard at all. There are loads of mods out there with good instructions, and take less than 10-15 minutes. The problem is, our fearless leader is busy as shit. I know of another site that uses phpBB2, and won't make the upgrade since the one person that can do the work has loads of other things on his plate.

In the case here, it's not that much work to upgrade to phpBB3 if you're not married to the template. If you are, and it's custom, then you're basically working from the ground up. Or maybe halfway at best.

Although admittedly from a more modern OS than Win 3.1 (AmigaOS 3.9).

That's cool. How do you take a screenshot on Amiga? or is that from uae?

@Ed - it's a DX2. Maybe you can find Lynx for Human68k...

It does, but not by default.

There are a number of programs that will do it; the one I used is called SView.

Hello.

I actually did migrate the data into a test PHPBB3 install some time back. It does have new functions, to be quite honest none I personally give a shit about, but it would at least put us on something with regular security updates. Having said that, it's been a long time since any big PHPBB2 forum got hosed by script kiddies anyway - too old for them to care about perhaps?

The problem came with themes.

To put it bluntly, every PHPBB3 theme I saw was ugly as sin. I find this one very easy on the eyes, I think quite a few people do actually, and sadly it doesn't exist for PHPBB3. I don't have time to learn enough about PHPBB2 and PHPBB3 themes to try to port it, so I went to the authors site. Rather tellingly, there was already someone there who posted a note offering to PAY him to port it. I've been meaning to make the same offer.

If anyone has the skills and spare time to port Spacepilot convincingly to PHPBB3, I'll give you $200 or a mostly complete Mushihimetama kit, your choice. Don't take it on unless you know you can do it though, I'd hate for someone to waste their time shooting for some cash, only for me to say "sorry that's not going to cut it".

It doesn't look like anybody's going to take you up on your offer, bloodflowers. I would still like to see a forum upgrade (in some form) though.

I could do it but I don't have the time. It's near enough a reskin of SubSilver2 (which is part of phpBB3)

I may have found someone now, I need to check back with him, he's never done it before and was looking into how much trouble it would be. Certainly it's not a very complicated template compared to many.

Cools: in your estimation how long does a task like that take?

I started to change gamengai's theme to PHPBB3. I gave up when I couldn't see any of the changes take... I was then told you have to refresh the theme within PHPBB3 somewhere. Ugh. It's on my list of things to do... it's a long list though.

The trick is going to be that PHPBB3 themes have a lot more color definitions. I assume they could be filled in only colors found in this one, but who knows. Easiest is to take a pre-existing PHPBB3 theme that you like (you'd want the same format, basically) and then gut it.

GP has the right idea. And yeah, its bloody annoying the way phpBB3 requires the cache to be manually updated.

The AstroCity theme (love it or hate it) on ArcadeOtaku took me the best part of a week hacking up ProSilver. ProSilver is a bit of a pig to mess about with though - there's a lot to it.

SubSilver2 (http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/subsilver2) is to all intents and purposes the same format as Spacepilot - I can't imagine it'd take much more than half a dozen hours to modify, since all the graphics and colours are already done.

Between Ghegs and myself (and Twyst) it's .. nearly done now. God what a nightmare, at this point the combined effort is past 48 hours of actual work.

I posted to the PHPBB forum trying to get help and offering to pay, and a kindly moderator failed to approve my post and warned me because it was 'solicitation'. Sure enough, it's there in the rules, and also counts as spamming. They must not like new users, what with that approach and the total lack of anything that resembles documentation.

Yeah well - fuck them in that case, I don't think I can be bothered to upload the theme when it's finished now, we'll be sending it to the original SpacePilot author only.

Good job guys. Your continued work is appreciated.

Yeah, I've been having fun working on a custom Wordpress template and planning something for namakoHQ, so I can understand that stuff like this often takes forever and is a pain. It's a nice feeling once it's finally done and you see the fruits of your labour, though.

And phpBB is a pile of shit, in form, function and support. Thank god there are better alternatives. :p
