What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

Darkest Hour mod for Red Orchestra.

You have to have big ol' megaballs to play this game.

I've been playing RO for a long time because I'm into "realism" FPSes, moreso if they have things like manual bolt cocking and accurate ballistics... which it does, among other great features.

Lately I've been hitting my games backlog some, and I've been playing a number of cheap 360 games from last year. Currently the ones I'm playing are Mercenaries 2 (the video game equivalent of a summer popcorn flick, nothing spectacular but lots of stuff blowing up) and Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts (not a bad game, but it got slagged in a lot of reviews simply for not being Banjo-Kazooie.)

I've been going through Star Ocean 4, albeit somewhat slowly. I don't think they could make the story worse if they tried, but the battle system (and 900 trophies) is sooo good.

f zero gp legends and having fun

picked it and maximum velocity up recently.....like it much better than MV....the graphics have more of an fzero feel and it controls better......

i found the controls in MV incredibly sluggish and it made the game very hard because of it

this totally makes me want to get a game cube so i can play fzero gx 8)

Playing FZero GX on the ol' Gamecube with a modded component video cable or Japanese D-Terminal cable to VGA output is as hardcore as it gets. You get to play it in 480p in 640 x 480 resolution and with arcade-spec 60fps framerate (Sega is famous for it's racing backhistory pedigree and it shows). Playing it with either composite video or S-Video output won't do this FZero GX game justice. ^_~

After having spent time on the original Sonic Riders, I figured I would snag the sequel, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, for the hell of it.... You know, it's a rare thing when a developer realizes how problematic their initial design was and sets out to fix it... cause that's what Sonic Team actually did. I found myself very pleasantly surprised. Pretty much every broken or annoying game mechanic (the punishing Air System, the charge jumping, the over abundance of bottomless pits, the obnoxiously cheap AI) was tossed out or greatly simplified. They then constructed a whole new engine around what was left, and in the process actually remembered what is was like to make something that's, you know.. fun. I can only hope that if they choose to make a sequel (it's Sonic Team, I think getting a third game is inevitable), that they base it around this game.

Been playing Elevator Action Returns still and... oh damn! I finished the game on one credit. I feel cool.

Also playing BlazBlue which just came out today... though I've had the thing for like 2 weeks becoz I'm reviewing it. Here's a summary: it's great.

My girlfriend and I have been hammering away at Rittai Picross on the DS the past fortnight.
Pretty fun and quite challenging little puzzler.

Gunforce (Arcade), Gunforce II (the style change from the first game is hilarious), and Knights in the Nightmare.

EDIT: Holy shit, Gunforce is unbalanced. GF2 isn't just a major stylistic change, it's an improvement.

Lufia & the fortress of doom... and it made me (again)realize how much better Japanese RPGs were back in the day, even something as "mediocre" as Lufia beats the crap out of almost everything released nowadays.

It's rare that I play anything other than a quick shmup these days, and even rarer that I take up RPGs, but I've been trying to get into Exit Fate. http://scfworks.com/ef.php

Fatal Labyrinth, Shining Force, and Phantasy Star 1. Apparently I'm on an RPG kick.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Been messing about with a Doom II MegaWAD called Scythe lately. Gets pretty nasty on UV, a very nice challenge. I made it up to the final map last Christmas, then formatted my PC and promptly lost my save. Reading the readme, the authors suggest playing the first two eps on UV+fast monsters, so I of course must return for more punishment.

It has superb corridor-blasting level designs... Doom II's "epic" maps bore me stiff now, so it's nice to get Doom I maps with Doom II monster insanity. The authors are genius dicks too. Ammo and breathing space is often scarce, making accuracy and agile maneuvering vital. And they actually made Cyberdemons scary again with clever timing and placement.

And holy shit I love ZDoom. The mouselook and controls are absolutely sublime, and goddamn, the insanely detailed surface damage / gore has killed vanilla Doom in my eyes forever. I've been pureeing zombie guts all over the walls for the last hour.
