XE-1ST2 Joystick on sale at NCSX

Post by dnbiola »

I thought some of you might be interested in this: http://www.shopncsx.com/xe-1st2joystick.aspx

It's on sale for $60.90 + shipping. I'd like a stick for my Genesis shmups and I'm thinking about getting this. Is it worth the $60 or should I just get a cheap "Sega Genesis 6-button Arcade stick." ...or possibly something else? Thanks for your help hardware aficionados!

The original Sega Arcade Power Stick is pretty good and has the usual three button layout. The later released Sega Arcade Stick with the 6-button was released for games that supported it.

If you do end up getting this Micomsoft produced XE-1ST2 Joystick, dnbiola, I'd to read your impressions on it. The really neat and nifty feature of switching the joystick to either 8-way or 4-way was ahead of it's time. The original Atari Games PCB version of Klax used a 4-way digital joystick setup, so by using the 4-way joystick setting, it would be properly set up for play with a copy of MD or Genesis Klax cart. ^_~

I just paid in hearbeat. :) Thanks for the heads up dnbiola. :D

I love that the ST2 joystick is so compact and slick. My primary joystick for the PS2, Saturn and my supergun is a XE-1ST2 (mines modified). They feel great for almost any game especially shmups, beat'em ups, and those classic 4-way games like Donkey Kong and Dig Dig.

get a Capcom CPS Fighter stick, they made them for the Genesis and are usually 40 bucks or less used, lightweight and strong, very reactive clicky stick, cool LEDs on buttons, 4 or 8 way switch, turbo etc..

Those sticks are pretty nice, but FWIW if you already have a nice PS/PS2 compatible stick the Tototek adapters are great. I have used the Genesis and Neo Geo ones with my HRAP and they work perfectly. I wouldn't mind having a nice compact stick like the XE-1ST2, but it kind of fails if you want to play fighters at all, or even games like ESPGaluda with full auto.

Don't get the Sega sticks; they're total crap.

Thanks! I think I might hold off on this and wait until I can afford a Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 and some of those Tototek adapters. I didn't know anything about those adapters and that makes the HRAP2 look even more attractive. Too bad it's about $200 bucks. :( Right now I have the X-arcade stick.

Maybe you could ebay your X-Arcade to pick up some extra cash for an HRAP? I have a 2-player X-Arcade, and honestly it's been sitting unused in my closet ever since I upgraded. The difference is really that big.

I'm thinking about it...It's pretty fun for 2-player fighting games for PS2 (which I have a lot of). I'm not as concerned with precision for fighting games as I am for shmups, so the X-arcade works well. But I'd like something more slick for shmups.

I found a store that will order a Real Arcade Pro for $150 for me (which would save me the $50 shipping from Play-Asia). Also, JHJ has a HRAP1 that he is considering selling. What do you all think would be a fair price for that?

Edit: It looks like they can't order it after all.

I'm not sure what the going rate on HRAP1's is these days, but to me it would depend on whether it was the old version or new version; the old version is more moddable and thus more desirable. The faceplate condition would also be a factor; the original HRAP has a metallic mirrored faceplate which gets scratched rather easily.

I've just ordered one.
Has anybody used it with an XHE-3 on a PC Engine?

I've got an XHE-3 and I tried it with a normal Genesis Pad and the second button does not work.
Is it because it's supposed to be an MSX controller adapter instead (which is close to the Genesis pinout)?

In that case, will I have to put the ST2 in 'Personal Computer' mode rather than 'Sega Series' to make it work on the PCE?

Thanks!

I've haven't ordered one of these Micomsoft produced XE-1ST2 joysticks myself but will recommend a high quality PC Engine arcade stick that was produced by Hori themselves. It goes by the official name of Hori Fighting Stick PC and comes with built-in two levels of autofire rates, slo-mo and the ability to switch between two button and six button setup via a switch. It originally debuted with a 7,800 yen price tag but others have gotten it for around $20 to $30 bucks brand new in Akihabara. My general PC Engine gaming scores easily go higher than normal due the superb craftmanship and durability of this hefty PCE joystick. The entire joystick base is constructed of metal and no plastic whatsoever which gives it it's solid weighted down heft. The latter Hori produced Hori Fighting Stick PS and Fighting Stick SS variants are basically knock-offs of this Fighting Stick PC joystick and aren't as made as durable though. ^_~

Yup. Set it to "Personal Computer" and your PCE adapter will work fine.

I got my ST2 from ncsx a couple days ago. Well worth the cost for a brandnew joystick. :D

I got the stick today and it's pretty sweet.
Definitely smaller than I expected but very usable.

I played a few rounds of Tatsujin with it and the stick was very good, although a bit short. It responded really well.

The buttons are a bit too close to each other (I dropped a bomb when pounding on the shoot button) but have a nice feel too them, although they are not the microswitch type.

I tried it on my PC Engine too (by setting it to 'Personal Computer' and using an XHE-3) and it worked fine there. It kinda sucks that the 'Run' button is on the XHE-3 and that the one on the stick does not work in that case though.

All in all a good small stick.

I've ordered an Hori Fighting Stick PC, following PC Engine Fan X's recommendation, so I'll test that shortly.
