Why does the PSP's battery drain so much passively?

You definitely have to hold it for like 5 seconds to really power off. I'm rather amazed to see people never properly shut down their unit (?)
But I am holding it for about 5 secs, and it is properly shutting down, cos like I said when I turn it on again I get the SCE boot screen. It wouldn't do that if it was just in sleep mode, right?

So it's definitely a full shutdown, but my power light doesn't flash four times. I wonder if running CFW stops the four flashes or something?

Also, I wonder if the fact that the battery itself has its own little chip + firmware might account for some of the power drain while the PSP is turned off.

So there's no confusion, mine's an original, unmodded fat. I've no idea how softmods might change the shutdown procedure, or might affect the battery life through other means.

i dont think it affects anything. the console works as expected, but with a few extras (emulators for the win!)...
