Embarassing things you have said to people regarding shmups

The only dumb thing I have experenced while playing shmups is the stupid questions and stuff other people say to me.

To be fair, DDP itself encourages bomb spamming. The game gives you (i think) 30 bombs total, and that's BEFORE you pick up any extras.

As for embarassing moments: "Why is your monitor sideways?"

A very large chunk of your score comes from maximum bomb bonus. If anything it encourages never bombing at all. Bombing even hurts your score more than dying. Not to mention it breaks chains if you're not on a boss. It sure does give you a lot of bombs but I would not consider it encouragement.

yeah, but a non shmupper isn't going to know (or care) about that. To be honest though, whenever I've got someone to play shmups, they've actually never ever bombed. I'm saying "you know you can bomb if you get in a scrape" but they just sit there and let the bullets hit them.

Anything I say to anyone about shooters is embarassing. This is not a hobby I like to broadcast, especially not to women. I didn't tell my current girlfriend about it until after I was sure she was really into me, and even now I never talk about it outside of "I went to a game center yesterday." It's my secret shame.

I don't know if you've noticed, but when you're talking with a girl and you start mentioning max bomb bonuses and rank control, the panties usually don't drop to her ankles. They think it's weird and boring and thus I don't feel the need to bring it up when I'm courting a lady. After some time and she digs me, I'll start to let it slip that I play games every so often.

When I say it's my secret shame, my tongue is in my cheek. Of course if it was so bad I wouldn't do it and I do enjoy it, but I'm not going to run up to people on the street and tell them that a "Donkey Kong kill screen is coming up".

I like my hobbies but I also enjoy maintaining a normal and healthy social and sexual life.

I've got comments like that before too! The scary thing is, I wasn't doing very well at all!

People are too easily impressed. Wonder how they'd respond when watching someone who is actually good.

This reminds me of back when I was working on a loop clear of Gradius V. I told my brother that I wanted to reach the end on a single credit. He's like "lol that's impossible".

His comments throughout my run:

Reached stage 3: "Are you really going for it? LMAO"
Reached stage 4: "Do you really think you can beat this? Come on."
Reached stage 5: "Wow, you're pretty good."
Reached stage 6: "Holy shit, you're great! You should record your runs!"

When my wife saw my LE Deathsmiles box she was like "why are all these women hugging eachother in a coffin filled w/ roses...what does that have to do w/ blowing up monsters"? I told her not to worry since they are not women, but in fact, they are actually young girls...and she was like "okayyyy".....

So I tried to explain that young girls are present in alot of japanese shmups, and broke out my LE of Mushi w/ the figure. She was like, "oh nice, you can see this one's panties...."

Thanks to CAVE, my wife now knows I'm a perv

I've read that the European version of Eyes Wide Shut was uncensored whilst the American version, some scenes were digitally blacked out. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) rules with an iron fist and if you can't satisfy their demands by cutting out "their version" of offending material in your film, it'll be no national movie rollout for your film (at least for the USA anyways). In plain simple language, you're fucked if your film can't be toned down for general theaterical release. Sure, you could go the indy film route but won't make as make as much revenue instead of going with a nationwide distribution setup. ^_~

I only used to play when my roommate was out of the room. It's distracting to play with weird questions or someone staring at screen with rather mixed thoughts. Once I was having a shump session as usual, when my roommate was out, and when he came back suddenly, I 'unintentionally' pressed escape. It was really awkward for a few minutes after that. I guess he was confused as to why someone would react so defensively over a video game. I thought I had enough moral courage to keep on playing, but after the knee jerk reaction, I couldn't really do much. Once you press escape, it's all over. Anyone else got 'caught' playing shumps?

I could illustrate with an example why it's bad, but it would be extremely offensive and probably get me banned from the internet, forever.

my friends generally respect my games....they are commonly referred to as 'those crazy japanese games'....

they are afraid to play them....they watch the demos

occasionally one of them will credit feed through the game and be all proud until i point out that they arent supposed to continue.....

then they go back to watching the demo

they know better than to speak ill of cave in my house

Space Invaders is probably more well-known though, I should use that.

But I generally avoid talking to people about shmups. Best case scenario, they still have no idea what you're talking about. Worst case scenario, well, read the posts above. I'm not ashamed of playing them, I just know that most people aren't the least bit interested.

Actually, I try to avoid talking about any video games for the most part. Even if I'm talking to someone who plays games, there's probably no overlap between the games we play.

As long as we're talking about shmups and girlfriends, though, mine thought that the laser in DDP looked like a giant penis. And now that she mentioned it, so do I. And now that I mentioned it, you might too. You're welcome.

Any time I try to explain shmups to other people, I mention Gradius, R-Type, and Ikaruga [in reverse order]. I usually embarrass myself with my reaction when people don't even know Gradius [at this point, I've got a crazy look on my face, I'm pacing up and down, and I'm thinking "What rock have you been living under?!"].
Granted, most people pick it up on Gradius or Ikaruga, which saves me massive embarrassment.

I'd say Space Invaders/Galaxian/Galaga, but they don't get my point across very well.
