I don't find many space shooters as visually appealing as this game.
+1, and with that Darius Gaiden, to which I said [to myself] "this reminds me of Rayforce".

Then you have Souky, Ikaruga and RSG, which look beautiful, and then R-Type Leo is somewhere on my pretty shmups list, albeit not as nice as the others listed here.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I think Pulstar is a fantastic-looking, yet rather un-fun game. OTOH, Blazing Star is pretty decent but looks like ass in my opinion.

Under Defeat, particularly stage 4's snowstorm and 5's ruined city.

Psyvariar 2 has a couple of stunning scenes, namely the first and second bosses' introductions. A couple of times I've almost felt it when the POV suddenly rockets downward on the latter. The TLB's patterns are a real spectacle as well.

Yeah, too bad about the rest of the game. I wanted to like that game but it was just too fucking easy! First the health bars, then the fact that you can dodge bullets... bleh. Easy even to S Rank all the way through.

I don't think I can very well add to the list at this point. Well, maybe only to add X Multiply and second Guwange. :) Of course modern games are flashier, so I'm sure I haven't played all the pretty ones.

X2 ( european version ) on the PS1. At least good graphic ...
but absolutely unplayable and definetly no fun at all.

The Japanese version is rebalanced and a little closer to being playable... still long and meandering though.

I found arena mode to be pretty hard and fun. I think beating the first arena level unlocked a harder difficulty mode option for the main game too.

The more I play Batrider, the more I appreciate how great its graphics are.

Kollision mentioned Border Down, which to me, is hands down the best looking shmup. Cotton Boomerang looks great, too... Witch hats?

Meh. Even on the hard difficulty, it's just slow and predictable overall. Pretty, though, I'll grant it that. Love the part where you watch the reflection in pools of water of bombs dropping on you from above -- really clever! It was just fun enough that I played through everything it offered, beat it quickly, and tossed it aside because there was nothing left to do.

After playing it today I can concur that Death Smiles is awfully good, and I think its lush 2D animations outrank the Red Star's equally detailed 3D graphics. I was surprised actually at how easy it was to play through, but there's so much more potential difficulty in scoring well or reaching the TLB.

It may be odd to focus on this kind of thing, but I think Asagi's shot looks really nice.

Also, it will be harder because, you know, Cotton Boomerang does have a home port.

This.
Truxton II has better graphics than dodonpachi, imho.
