however not the official update, but a hacked one which just installs the new
files without replacing the old ones with hack-proof versions.

Idolmaster pushed the 360 into indie territory. Blame that. Seriously. It's CERO C for a reason. Erotic visual novels always had a limit on the PS2, where Sony of Japan would allow 2D games to retail at full price but without the ero scenes, but it's different with the 360. These things are BIG in Japan or so you will find out if you ever visit.. people are easily attracted to characters that don't exist. Maybe it's because most asians are ugly.

Shmups hitting the 360 isn't a bad thing whatsoever, nevertheless, would you rather they not be ported at all?

This is THE reason.

A long time ago, before the XBox 360 was ever even in development, someone asked Tomonobu Itagaki why he, a prominent Japanese game developer, chose to make his games for the XBox when the PS2 was the dominating system and preferred by all of his Japanese colleagues. His answer to this was "because I want to know that when anyone buys my game, it isn't by mistake."

Think about that for a minute.

What he meant by that was that there were actually quite a few games like his available in Japan, made by Japanese developers, popular for Japanese systems. It wasn't a very uncommon thing for a friend, family, or heck even a fan to grab a game such as DOA, Ninja Gaiden, etc. just because it fit into this slot of a genre, and his moving his games over to the XBox was an intentional statement. If someone were to play his game on that system, it would not be by accident. You don't just happen to be a Japanese video gamer and buy an XBox 360 then one of his titles by accident.

As hard as it is for overseas otaku to understand, the few gamers in Japan who game on the XBox 360 are gamers who want that system. They didn't buy it by accident. And they don't want it for no reason, they want it because they place a real value on the games that they play, and they're willing to go beyond the status quo to have it.
