I was showing my girlfriend (now fiancee, but girlfriend at the time) some shmups and she wanted to try them out two player. (You can see why I proposed to her. ) Things went all well and good for a while - until a ways into DoDonPachi she discovers that she can bomb spam the bosses by dying and bombing continually.
Bomb spamming is a pet peeve of mine. It has always driven me nuts. I inform her of this is a not-particularly-nice manner. (Nice guy points -100, I know.) I catch myself and immediately apologize and explain how it's something that's always bugged me. She's not particularly offended, but finds it highly amusing that I get so worked up over it.
To this day she still gives me crap about it.

"You're at shmups.com. We're all psychics full of righteous indignation!"
If she likes to bomb spam on DDP, there's not much you can do about that. ^_~
Just relax, it's just a game whether it's the actual PCB itself, the PSX port or running on Mame/Mame32 emulation. Now if the role situation between you & your fiancee was applied in reverse, just ponder how it would be in her situation. She seems to brush off what others think about playing shmups the conventional way (or correct way). For some that are new to the shmups genre, eventually he or she will learn the proper way how to play. It took me a very long time just how to learn how to play the arcade puzzler Klax properly and with that insider knowledge/experience gained from it, it has made me a better Klax player. ^_~
You know you play shmups too much when you're driving on the freeway in someone else's car for the first time and are a bit nervous cause you don't know the vehicles hitbox yet.
lol not that "that" actually has anything to do with this thread but I've been wanting to say it for a while now.
@Cthulhu:At least she isn't credit feeding (is she?).
@Momiji (Yes I did.): I showed a teacher who tried to claim I said "shmuck" at one point.
In most cases, I avoid the topic of shmups altogether, since most people just watch me play them and leave me alone, mostly. I'm surprised I've never gotten a "why are you playing the same game, like, 5 times lol".
Getting 'caught' by my friends playing any shmup with lolis is pretty embarrassing. I don't play many of them, mostly stuff like Shikigami no Shiro or ESPGaluda, but I still have to explain that they're good games regardless and I don't really like the lolis.

Which lolis? I didn't seem to notice any of those in either game. Maybe what you mean is simply "anime characters"?
Which brings us to what

saying to a mate of mine that resi 4 would be better if it was 2D, top-down, auto-scrolling, and the zombies should be colour-coded, and you get a bonus for shooting patterns of three
whenever i say a shmup has good graphics, i nearly always get laughed at

Well, once I put on perfect cherry blossom to show to my friend. He got a little excited and said: "Hey, it's like one of those atari games." I kept playing and he was shocked at the amount of bullets. I tried explaining the hit box to him but he didn't get it I think.
Another time I showed the GB-2 loop video to a friend. He is generally very skilled players of other games but completely unfamiliar with shooters. First he asked me whether it was dig dug? After a while, he was chanting wtf in awe every couple of seconds. Surprisingly he wasn't so impressed when I showed him cave games. I think it was the relatively slower pace. Also, the chaining of DDP is a little hard to appreciate just from a video.
my gf said a good one the other day actually. i asked if she could name 5 cave games, and she was doing well before she said "radiant silvergun...? no, wait... that's a trevor shmup?"

My friend makes me laugh when he plays my shmups. The more bullets that get shot at him the more he hits the fire button. As if he is trying to keep his firepower in sync with how many bullets are coming down at him.
After about 2 minutes (if he is still alive), he is frantic. I have a chair to sit on, but he's standing up at my cabinet like it makes a difference, sweating at the brow. His body language states that he is so tense, like he really is on the brink of getting slaughtered. Then the first boss appears and all sorts of obscenities come out of his mouth. After 1 credit he is completely *ucked and exhausted and something to the effect of "I think thats about the best I can do".
Sometimes if he is in the right mood he says things like "Yeah, take that you bastard", "here, you want some more of this?" like Montana in Scarface
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yes, she was. Trying to get people who have no experience playing manic shmups (or heck, shmups in general) to not credit feed is a waste of time in my experience.

Too late, already engaged.

My brothers do this. Neither has the remotest respect for sprites.

sorry, I tend to lump 'cutesy anime characters' under the blanket term 'lolis' alongside the underage sexualized anime girls. My bad.
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
The only shmup my friend plays is Ikaruga...because its the only one he knows of. He thinks DOJ Black Label does not look fun (because of difficulty) and that Death Smiles has bad graphics It's aggravating that he is so close minded because in his eyes nothing can touch Ikaruga and nothing else is worth playing.
Yes, Ikaruga is a good game, but certainly not the ONLY shmup of the universe.
