Most disappointing or unexpected death that made you mad!
I thought it would be fun to post the times when you died on a shmup, and it was unexpected or just pissed you off.
Here are some of mine.
I was fighting a boss in Mushi Futari when I got hit and when I came back in I tapped the C shot once and the boss died. arrrgh!
I was about to no-miss gradius on nes, when I forgot about the door at the end that closes on you. I had to ram into it, thus destroying my no miss attempt.
anyone else?

I find that I am far more irritated by a death in a Cave game - where I can be just a mere pixel off on a seemingly easy bullet dodge and still get blown up - than by a Raizing game, where a death usually comes from a moment of stupidity/lack of concentration, and not by misjudging the collision detection.robivy64 wrote:Raizing games are nutorious for these moments.

In the Gamest Video Vol. 39 superplay run of Dodonpachi by ace player ZBL-NAI, there is an Omake section that shows footage of him making numerous attempts at 1CC a serious session of DDP but just missing a bullet or barrage of bullets and still off by a single pixel resulting in the fighercraft exploding. That must have been so frustrating, especially when trying to pull off a feat like that. ^_~Icarus wrote:I find that I am far more irritated by a death in a Cave game - where I can be just a mere pixel off on a seemingly easy bullet dodge and still get blown up - than by a Raizing game, where a death usually comes from a moment of stupidity/lack of concentration, and not by misjudging the collision detection.robivy64 wrote:Raizing games are nutorious for these moments.
The arcade shmup developers want the player to think that it is him or her that made a mistake that results in a death. Usually, they succeed. ^_~
American Sammy's USA region Daioh PCB is quite notorious for ramping up the difficulty factory really quick if the player is doing well within the first few stages. I've played against another stranger on Daioh at an arcade and he was swearing up a storm by the cheap deaths that was happening quite frequently -- I could see easily see how hard it become to the point of the bullets traveling faster than your fightercraft moves. Talk about unfair advantage that the CPU has over the player(s).

Dieing in Gradius always makes me want to punch babies.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Aero Fighters (the first one):
Hmm... the screen has stopped scrolling. There's a building near the top of the screen, okay. Now there's a glow coming out of the building, I wonder what's next. What??? I just got hit by a laser coming out of that building, and now the boss ship that obviously fired that laser and broke out of that building has just made its appearance!!!
That taught me to *never again* wait in front of any sort of structure waiting for the boss to appear. Off to the side, maybe, but never directly in front of it.

Hit the bomb button, bomb deploys, but I die before the bullets cancel.
Die along with a boss/major enemy; we shoot each other down at the same time.
Die by a slow-flying but non-shooting object because it doesn't blow up in time during point-blanking it.
Dying by moving backwards into a bullet that already passed by, even though the bullet moves faster than the ship.
My timing SUCKS.

Deaths that piss me off are unavoidable death (like, lazer beams in Raizing, you need to know them, otherwise you can't really avoid them) and deaths you couldn't expect less (you didn't see how you died because you were looking at items and everything was confuse, like in Dimahoo at some moments).

Double Mode in Raiden 3.
Something happens on my brain that, everytime I die, I think I am safe for the next 2 seconds. It's automatic, and I can't avoid it. But that's not the case in Raiden 3 Double Mode, as when you die, the other ship is still on screen. Many times I saw a game over because of this. Red ship blows up, my brain go "Ok, relax for 2 seconds, you are invincible now", then blue ship blows up, and its game over.

^^this. But doesn't this only happen in the second loop?toaplan_shmupfan wrote:Aero Fighters (the first one):

On three different arcade Aero Fighters machines, I saw that happen the first time that stage occurred (one of the first three stages in random order). Of course, I didn't stay in the middle and wait for the beam after the first time after I learned my lesson about that ship... I stayed off to the left or right side and waited for the ship to break out of the building.

I get killed way too often when trying to panic bomb and being a little too late. Really frustrating when I still had some bombs in stock.
I also had some shitty deaths in Giga Wing 2 and Mars Matrix where I expected the reflect force to be ready while it wasn´t... and so I flew directly into the hell of bullets

Mushi Futari, Maniac mode, I was able to no miss stages 1-3 with 250 million points at the beggining of stage 4, only to die 3 times in stage 4 most of the deaths having bombs left over.
aaaaaaarrrrrrggghhhhhh!!!!
Oh Yeah and running into a bullet from the side BLOWS!!!! Mainly because I was dumb enough to run into it.
