Favorite all time shmup?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

OK, some may say this is pointless and just to look at the top 25, but I think the top 25 is mainly favorite for "right now". If someone put a laser gun to your head, what would be your all time favorite shmup? And really think about it!

Mine would have to be.............. Ikaruga

Seems like you could look at the last voting thread for the top 25, and look at everyone's #1, to see what their favorite all-time shmup is, right?

At least that's true for me. DDP DOJ, as it happens.

That's only if everyone on this site voted. Which, I believe it's safe to say, isn't the case.

For me, it's Thunder Force IV.

Hmm. I can't really pick just one. I'm still fairly new to shmups, so I'm still discovering new ones all the time, but I haven't spent enough time with many to qualify as 'favorite'.

Overall, ESPGaluda, Gunbird 2, and Perfect Cherry Blossom are my favorites. At least, those are the ones I play the most, so that has to account for something!

Hard to say, but Gradius IV was really appealing to me. The pace and difficulty is just right, it has an epic boss rush and the introduction of the mine type which is really useful / fun. Recovering is the most managable in this game than any other true Gradius game. Loop 2 also has a balanced difficulty but loop 3 is when the suicide bullets start coming, if you dare to play that far. I can only get to 2-6 but it has provided me with 90 hours of entertainment even though it's mostly survival based gameplay.

Truxton

I was in college when I first played it, hardly in it's era... I dunno why it effected me so much more than the ones I did (R-Types, Raidens, Gradiusses); but it really re-fueled my interest for shooters.

Still, something about the combination of it's graphics, sound, music and difficulty is just perfect to me. A touch of nostalgia for that bygone era probably helps, too. ;)

Well, in that case, the list sucks. So, i'm guessing your monitor is just a liar.

For me, right now == all time. But anyway, today I don't like shmups at all, and I certainly don't have a favourite.

I didn't touch Batrider until last year but I would have to say that. It takes Bakraid and Garegga -- and improves on them. The game is versatile and never a bore to play. The soundtrack owns. The characters are nicely drawn. The stages are very well done. There's a bunch of stuff in there, really. Love it.

Runner up would be Raiden DX, mostly due to the graphics. All the debris flying around and stuff easily made me like it. I can't speak for Raiden DX's scoring system though because it's practically nonexistent. But, that's Seibu for you. Heh.

Redundant topic Nr. 3345

Just look at the voting topic, everyone has already posted his favourite shmup there.

01. Vote for the 25 shmups you feel are the "top" of all time.
Favorite all time has nothing to do with what I feel is the best or top all time.
Favorite all time has nothing to do with what I feel my favorite is right now either.

Favorite all time has nothing to do with what I feel is the best or top all time.
I'm not getting it then. :?
What is the definition of "favourite all time", if it has nothing to do with my favourite game (which of course I think is the best) ?

How can you dislike the game, which for you is the best game of all time?

Heck, I didn't even vote, as i'm sure some others didn't. I don't like the point thing you have to give each game. It's wonky, and makes me not even bother.

I think he means that some people might have voted based on factors other than emotion or personal experience. For example, paying respect to what appeared to be a defining shmup in shmup history, or voting for a shmup so that newcomers to the genre would look at the list and find something accessible to try out.

As for me, I haven't played many, but rRootage is pretty valuable to me right now and it's probably given me the most joy. I don't have a lot of time to play video games any longer, so its five-minute runs are ideal.

Why would your favorite shmup be anything other than the one you consider to be "the best of all time"?

01. Vote for the 25 shmups you feel are the "top" of all time. (What constitutes top is up to you: best, favorite, most influential, most significant, mix-and-match, et cetera.)
At least for me a game being my own personal favorite wasn't that important for what I voted. I gave votes for many games that I don't really like that much but I do recognize them as great games and think they really do deserve the vote, while I did leave out quite a lot of games that I like but thought that they didn't deserve the vote.

Game (a) was my favorite for 10 years. Game (b) has been my favorite for the past 6 months. Which one is the favorite for all time overall? Read the opening post again.

I suppose it would be like someone who freely chooses to smoke knowing that it would be better not to. They think the reasons available speak decisively in favor of taking X to be better than Y, but they nonetheless like Y more.

Well said...

As for LTC, the game (b) would clearly be the all-time favorite. How long it's been your favorite has no bearing on the question at hand. If you have a long-standing favorite, but then discover a game that is better, the newly-discovered game should not be discounted just because you hadn't played it until recently... if it's a better game, it's a better game, no matter when it was made or when you first played it!

IMHO

2 weeks later you find game (c) which becomes your new favorite. At least in my dictionary 'current' and 'all time' are different things. If you read evil_ash_xero's post it's pretty obvious he didn't mean current favorite.

I think the difference between "current favorite" and "all-time favorite" are as follows:

I consider Dodonpachi to be the my all-time favorite, and the best game of all-time. After a year of non-stop play, I feel I've had enough of it for now, and decide put time into, let's say, Gradius V, but I still feel that Dodonpachi is a better game, I'm just playing G5 to give my life some variety. I think then, G5 would be my "current favorite" (as in, it's the game that I favor with the most gameplay at the moment) but DDP is still my "all-time favorite" and "best game of all time". Soon after that, I get Daioujou, and I feel that it's better than DDP. My focus shifts toward DOJ. DOJ would then be both my current and all-time favorite, as well as best game of all-time. Even if I were to take a break from DOJ to play DDP again, DOJ would still be my favorite of all-time (and best game of all-time) because I feel it is a better game.

Basically that was all a big lengthy scenario for saying: Current favorite = what you're playing most at the moment. All-time favorite = what you consider to be the best game of all-time.

edit: then of course there is the issue of people who vote based on a game's influence in the genre. Despite the top 25 voting thread clearly stating you could vote based on whatever you want, including a game's influence, I think that is wrong. "Best" and "Most influential" are completely different things. "Best" is a word that describes something that is so incredibly well-executed, so perfect that no game has surpassed it, simply "the best". Whether or not any later games were influenced by it, or even whether the game itself was influenced by older games, should have no bearing on the matter. Because in the end, the best game is still the best.
