Just need a quick answer.. is TATE really necessary?

Post by redeyeguy_KIO »

I mean for vertical shmups like DDP, Garegga, etc. I had a pretty good time playing stretched out, although when I switched to vertical, I noticed that the bullets appeared tinier and it changed up the feel a lil bit. Can't quite put my finger on it though... maybe I'm just too used to playing stretched out.

Is a vertical screen needed for vertical shmups, or can people do just fine on a stretched out display? Thanks!

It shouldn't be stretched out no matter what, just smaller. If you're on a widescreen TV change the aspect to 4:3, or if the game has a setting change that to 16:9.

That said, Yoko is fine, just smaller.

Unless you're doing some no-no aspect ratio stretching, the display should look bigger in TATE (duh). So...

Ah... I played stretched out because I was playing arcade games emulated on my laptop, and I didn't like the really small screens. But I guess it's doesn't let me play as good as I could with vertical?

I dunno, I'll see if I can fiddle around with it, although I didn't find playing stretched out THAT bad.

If you stretch the width you'll obviously move faster horizontally, which will give you a great advantage. Bigger is better.

is tateing a laptop really that much effort that youd rather play in spastic stretched out vision?

You'd need an extra keyboard/a controller.
Unless you like playing with your hands in the air and on one side...

I'm going to start with the assumption that stretched out means that the game is viewed in a Panorama mode instead of letterbox, when the game was originally on a vertical monitor.

To that extent, it really depends on the game.

For older shmups, I've played Tokio and also Gekirindan in panorama mode and I actually like it better than in letterbox mode but then it does also place enemies a bit closer than when in the letter box mode. So then something like Grid Seeker starts to play almost like a slower-paced manic shmup due to the closer proximity of the spread bullet attacks combined with the very large hitbox of the player's plane or helicopter. (Grid Seeker offers a choice among three.) Additionally, the Genesis version of Twin Cobra is really confined in its panorama mode such that the stage 5 and stage 8 bosses are in really close proximity to the helicopter (and that game doesn't offer a letterbox mode nor does it offer a Tate mode). In all cases, games in Panorama mode will have items looking horizontally stretched vs. the original vertical monitor or even the letterbox modes.

Other games, such as Strikers 1945, Varth, Raiden III--those are letterboxed very nicely so that the screen doesn't really seem too narrow (especially Raiden III's slightly stretched letterbox mode) and for those games I simply couldn't imagine them being properly played using a panorama mode. Raiden III does also offer a Tate mode but I'm okay with the stretched letterbox mode so I don't use the Tate mode.

As far as I am concerned, I play lotta vertical shoots ((DDP, Garegga, Batsugun, Shiki, Ikaruga...) on my Saturn and Wii in Yoko because it is hard to tate my TV (72cm).

I am NOT happy with it. Each time I turn Tate mode on in the game, I notice differences that makes me wanna turn that blast TV on its side ! First is bigger displaying aera that could allow me to actually sit in my couch insted of sitting on the floor near the TV. Second is non-stretched graphics making game way more beautiful (think about Garegga and DDP here). Third is ENTIRE displaying of the play area. Believe me, playing Garegga or Batsugun while only seeing 2/3 of what I am supposed to see is a real annoyance.

I'd say, TATE if you can.

Yeah, it shouldn't be indeed.

This would only happen, for instance, in the Original 2 modes in the console Strikers games.

It shouldn't, yes. But it sometimes does. Batsugun and Garegga handle this by allowing the player to scroll the screen up and down when coming close to the horizontal edge of the screen, as in Ketsui DS is you know it. But this remains annoyance.
As an exemple, when playing Batsu on yoko mode and coming to 3rd stage boss Mad Steel Darkness, he shoots his first bullets before I am even able to see him on screen !

Batsugun does cut off a bit of the playing area (about a half a ship width) when playing in tate - but in order to fix this, you'd need a TV with horizointal and vertical width controls like a video monitor.

You can find them pretty cheap if you look hard enough and going tate is the only way to play vertical games as they were intended on console ports.

I first thought Battle Garegga wasn't very good at all. Then I tried it in proper tate mode. After a couple credits, I fell in love. These days, well, suffice to say that I find it perfectly acceptable that it was ranked #1 in this year's top 25 poll.

Set it in TATE and then turn the laptop 90 degrees.

That won't damage my laptop display will it? I have heard bad stories about TATE'ing certain displays and then your screen is fucked.

That's only a problem on CRT displays (knocking something loose) or expensive LCDs (dropping them).

You're totally safe with a laptop display.

Each time I rotate my laptop, I'm wondering if it could harm my hard drive on the long term.
Can it really do no harm to hard drives, as long as the laptop is rotated gently ?

a laptop is meant to be mobile....do you really think standing it on its side is gonna damage it?

HDD's arent THAT fragile....worry not....

unless you are blocking air vents on the laptop by standing it on its side it shouldnt cause any harm at all

although most laptop screens are fairly small anyways....and most newer laptops have vga out.....why not just hook it up to a CRT and tate that?

better picture....larger screen......dont have to risk knocking over your laptop....

probably a better option

Thanks guys for the info. I guess I'll TATE my laptop when I find a safe spot to do so, and something to support it with it.

Is it just me, or do laptop screens look kind of shimmery when they're rotated on their side?

WHOA... I just tated my laptop (HD screen ftw), and played DoDonPachi and Guwange....

FREAKING INSANE!!!

You guys are right, the game DOES look much better this way. I can't believe I used to play it with full stretch, I feel like a moron now, haha.

Guwange looks especially impressive. Wow...

Now when it comes to vertical shmups, it's TATE FOR LIFE. 8)

For me, TATEing my TV my my standard shoot up (well - shoot up relatively), and I'm too much of a heathen to notice stretched bullets! Finding the right TATE set-up is well worth the effort, and makes playing a lot more exciting.
