Puyo Puyo 7
Puyo Puyo 7
I've been so busy creaming myself over VOOT that I missed out on some big news two months ago: Puyo Puyo 7 for PSP, DS, and Wii!

I don't actually own any of those consoles, but if there's an active online community then I would certainly consider buying one.
2009 is turning out to be an awesome year to play 90's games online... VOOT, Puyo Puyo, and my guilty pleasure, Magic the Gathering. My girlfriend is going to hate me.

You need to see some videos of advanced chain building in heated vs play...MathU wrote:I'm a huge puzzle game fan, but I've never really liked Puyo Puyo much myself. It's so simplistic and I don't understand why other people like it so much.
Though personally I also don't really like the new ones as much either, I prefer the classic rules.

I'd go as far as saying the series peaked with Puyo Puyo 2. It fixed all the issues the first game had and left it at that. All further gameplay changes / new puyos introduced in later games were broken in one way or another.iatneH wrote:Though personally I also don't really like the new ones as much either, I prefer the classic rules.

I agree the new puyos and modes in later games rather made the game worse, but you still have the classic mode in newer versions and they did improve it quite a bit : you get a nicer point counting system, more BGMs, characters to vary the voices a little bit, and most importantly a new distribution system. That new distribution system means that the next randomized puyos that the players get are now subject to rules instead of being 100% random, and that allows the game to always support construction of large chains, whereas in puyo2 your distribution is so bad sometimes that you just have to starting breaking as small a combo as 3 hits. Also, in puyo 2 you will often get a screen clear on the first 2 pairs of puyos that come in, which sucks, and the new distribution also fixes that (minimum 3 hits needed for a screen clear because you never just get the same puyos in the beginning).Herr Schatten wrote:I'd go as far as saying the series peaked with Puyo Puyo 2. All of that is in Puyo Puyo 15th anniversary, which is the best version imo. Besides, there are a lot of fun secondary modes that aren't broken and can be a lot of fun, such as "dig to get the star", "in the dark", "mega puyos"...

I never bothered picking up ~n or Fever because a lot of people seemed to agree with this. Since they were console only, they made them more gimmicky and multiplayer-friendly at the cost of balance, right? Sun was good but I prefer 2.Herr Schatten wrote:I'd go as far as saying the series peaked with Puyo Puyo 2. It fixed all the issues the first game had and left it at that. Regardless, the good news is that you'll be able to use the old rules if you prefer:

The big question is how many people online would also prefer these rules...
I'm still looking forward to it, but dumping the Compile cast never made sense to me. Suketoudara is the shit.GaijinPunch wrote:The only way this will be good is if they bring back the Compile characters and unfuck what Sonic Team did to the series.
Well i don't think fever rules unbalance the gameplay.
Sure, if you build up large chains quickly and your opponent is a noob, he'll most likely win because he enters the fever first, while you still don't have a single point towards fevermode.
However knowing that you can adjust to this fact and change your technique and still pwn the noob.
BTW someone playing Puyo Anniversary online on the DS?
There even is a fantranslated version floating around.
