Lovin' the XBOX!!....

Post by dave4shmups »

Yes, I got mine this week-and all I can say is "WOW" about the graphics and the games! EVEN the first-gen XBOX titles look better then some current PS2 games (with my PS2 experience, I should know!), and they are just SO fun!

So far, I have: Halo, Gunvalkyrie, Serious Sam, Sea Blade (yes I do actually like this one!), Blood Wake, Crimson Skies, the Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future double-game disc, Outrun 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and I'm waiting for Wings of War, which I ordered on Ebay.

Each one of these games is so much fun it's SICK-SICK I TELL YOU! :P And keep in mind, that, aside from Sega GT 2002, not ONE is a sports title-proving that you don't have to be into those to enjoy the XBOX.

I'm having SUCH a blast with this thing-and I'll have 11 games once Wings of War get's here. Plus, there's still plenty of great titles coming out for the XBOX 1-like sequels to both Serious Sam, and Ninja Gaiden! Heck, I like this system so much, if it ever does drop in price to $99.00 new, I'll get one just as a spare-I'm dead serious!

Future plans? Well, I will eventually get a modded SNES, but as far as an NES or Famicom goes-right now, I'd honestly rather get a GBA-SP. I mean, other then the fact that neither Contra nor Super C are on there, the NES and Famicom titles available for play on the GBA are good enough.

Of course, I could always get one of these to play Famicom games (and then NES games) on a GBA SP:

http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?catego ... ts_id=4326&

But that just doesn't look like a very comfortable set-up...unless someone on here owns one and can tell me different.

That's excellent. Be sure to check out Burnout 3 also - normally I don't like racing games (or any kind of games even coming close to sports, for that matter), but this one really kicks everyone's ass. Should be pretty cheap by now, too...

And of course, there's modding - not sure if you're willing to take the risk, but a friend of mine took the time and cash to get his modded, and now, playing our favorite SNES games and mame shmups on it is a blast.

Thanks, yeah, I've heard REALLY good things about Burnout 3-they talk about how awesome it is on almost every episode of "X-Play" on G4 TV!

I'd really like to get Slient Scope Complete, as I always like arcade-style gameplay. Some gripe about the lack of the actual sniper rifle from the arcade cab, but I personally found that thing to be pretty annoying, in terms of control!

I'd also like to pick up House of the Dead III-I know the XBOX doesn't have a decent light-gun, but I've read that this game controlls really well with the XBOX controller.

As far as the GBA vs. NES deal, I might as well just pick up this:

http://www.konami.com/gs/castlevaniacontra/

for our PC, instead of waiting on Konami! I actually had this collection 2 years ago, but it wouldn't run on our old '99 Compaq. Now that we have a year old Vaio, with XP, it should run fine-at least I hope you don't need to buy any graphics cards for this collection! :?

Blood Wake, nice choice. You should check out Breakdown, the first Buffy, Dead to Rights, Kill.switch, Galleon, and the originial Prince of Persia. Also, DOA XBV is great no matter what the haters say; it's a nice relaxing game and the collecting is fun for some reason. Max Payne 2 isn't bad and Sonic Mega Collection is nice. Deus Ex I also found quite enjoyable as well as Thief and the Bloodrayne games (although there is a lot of hate going around for that series)

Oh, how wrong you are. There is a BRILLIANT lightgun for the Xbox sanctioned by Sega but only released in Japan. It's called the Thrustmaster Beretta 92FS.

Other good games (that are more under the radar) are Phantom Dust and Otogi 1 & 2.

And if you like big hack and slashers Kingdom Under Fire is great.

I encourage you not to check out Kill Switch and Galleon at all costs actually. Kill Switch is basically centered around one gimmick that wears thin very quickly and Galleon just lacks polish and effort.

Yeah, I didn't like Kill.Switch on the PS2 at all-not because of the gimmick, but because of the horrible freakin' aiming the game featured, unless you were using a sniper rifle.

I really didn't enjoy Prince of Persia Sands of Time. Maybe I just needed more time with the controls, but I HATED them. Seriously, you get the guy walking on a wall, and he falls off after a few steps. I didn't think any of the other gymnastic moves you have to perform in this game were any better. And then there was combat-you have to stab your enemies TWO times before they're completely gone-that's ridiculous, and it makes big battles a major pain in the arse, IMO.

I know a lot of people love Sands of Time, but I personally found it to be much more frustrating then fun.

But still, thanks for all the game reccomnedations folks, they're all appreciated.

:D

Now if I can just resolve my NES vs. GBA debate! :?

What's "DOA XBV" stand for? And would that Japanese light gun you mentioned work on my US XBOX?

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball [fanservice GET]. I don't see why not, JP controllers work on US Xboxs so this shouldn't be any different but I can't say for sure because I have a modded JP Xbox.

I haven't played Kill.switch on the PS2 but it's a pretty crappy console for FPSes so I wouldn't judge the game on that. Every game has a gimmick and imo K.S has a very good one. I never noticed any problem aiming unless of course you were blind firing from behind cover, and your aim should suck when you can't see anything.

Sands of Time is a classic. I understand your complaints about combat, although it doesn't bother me too much. But as to all the acrobatics, they are easy to pull off and work perfectly, you're doing something wrong???

Why no one has mentioned Knights of the Old Republic? If there is a game that made of the Xbox what it is today, is that.

As much as I hate Bioware for butchering D&D PC gaming I have to admit that KOTOR was a lot of fun. The storyline was great and even though I hate the non-turn based combat, the pause allows you to simulate turn based combat pretty decently. However, KOTOR was not the game that made the XBox, without a doubt it was the original Halo.

Marvel at the beauty that is the 92FS:

I just love the weight and feel of the gun. Perhaps the best lightgun I've ever owned. Not to mention it's based on the design of a real life Beretta and dead accurate in HotD III. I'm STILL so bitter VC3 was never ported.

Definitely. The sequel was a buggy mess, but the first KoToR was a great game. I can also vouch for Psychonauts being a great game. I am not all that far into it as of yet, but from what I have played, I cannot wait to play more of it. Mega Man Anniversary on XBOX is about the most polished version of the game, and it goes for $20 new. Alien Hominid just came out as well, and Phantom Dust is another one to check out.

My two favorite XBOX games are PDO and Soul Calibur II. I wore out my first XBOX, and I would bet the amount of play time on those two games would be the major catalyst to it's death.

As far as your NES vs. GBA debate goes, mod your xbox and you can play as many NES and GBA games as you like..and with save states.

Actually, I like Kill Switch a lot! Its basically a "special ops/Splinter Cell/Ghost Recon style" with a fast arcade "Time Crisis" feel. So you don't care for it...oh well.

I also would reccomend the Max Paynes... if you like those, and you like Medieval Fantasy, get "Enclave"!

Another cheap "driver n shooter" is Maximun Chase. (shouldn't cost more that $10.00)
It features cool chase driving, as well as shooting in the style of Panzer Dragoon. At least check it out.

I guess I must've been doing something wrong, because I just couldn't pull any of the moves off without trying (and dying) 100 times! Maybe I just need to give the game another look.

I've heard that Max Payne is a GREAT third-person shooter! And yeah. I'd love to get my paws on KOTR-although I wish it was an action RPG.

Speaking of which, how's Fallout Brotherhood of Steel? From what I've seen and read of it, it looks a lot like Baldur's Gate with guns instead of swords. I'm also interested in Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat.-the sea combat looks like it's straight out of "The Ancient Art of War at Sea" (anyone else remember that classic!) and the on-foot sequences are supposed to be pretty good as well.

And, how about Yager? That one looks pretty cool.

While I haven;t played either Max Payne 2 is supposed to be a whole lot better than number 1 so I'd go straight to that one if you get either.

Fallout is not supposed to be so hot, If you want a game like Dark Alliance get Dark Alliance. there is also Dungeons and Dragons Heroes that is pretty fun (really short and easy though)

Yager is a poor mans; Crimson Skies I'd pass on it totally. Its age really shows (not graphically, but gameplay wise) compared to Crimson Skies. It's actually a couple years older than Crimson Skies so that would be the reason I'd guess.

Burnout 3 sucks by the way - all glitz and no substance, or fun. I loved it for 2 days, then realised how much it sucked - luckily in time to refund it.

Interesting.

Well, in any case, I'm afraid that Outrun 2 has spolied me too much! Are there any other arcade-style racers on the XBOX?

Man, is Crimson Skies TOUGH! It's a blast, but it's amazing how differently events take place in each stage, depending on what you do first in each stage!

Outrun 2 is addictive as hell, isn't it? :)

PGR2 is a little more on the sim-side, but it's a TON of fun... one of my favorite racers of all time! Plus, there are so many exotics... I was in heaven.

Burnout 2 had a better crash mode than 3 IMO, although the crash mode on Burnout 3 is about the only reason I ever play it anymore. Burnout 3 is as of now the last EA game I'll ever buy (I won't give them anymore business after the exclusive NFL contract bit.)

I actually don't even play my XBox much anymore. It does usually get the best version of the multiplatform releases, and it's also the best one available for racing games. We also play Halo 2 over system link on occasion here too (there are two of them in the house.)
We want you, save our planet!
