CAVE board quastion

Post by Almighty »

Can someone tell me the difference between a Korean and Japanese Cave board?
And how do you know if it's Japanese? Are Korean boards kinda Bootlegs or cheaper in purchase?

The general rule of "The Japanese version costs more" is applied pretty much across the board in the world of PCBs... Cave stuff is no exception. I don't know of any particular case of a Korean version of Cave games. My guess is, due to almost no dialogue, they just had Japanese ones, and anytthing else is a bootleg. I don't recall seeing them in Mame either.

Cave has JPN and "International" region boards, with an exception for the first Donpachi, which does has a Koren pcb, and Progear which has an Asia region.

As GP mentioned, rule of thumb is otaku will drive the price for original JPN region boards up, despite there being no difference other than a logo or text in at the beginning and end of the game (and for Progear some japanese speaking/screaming removed). As for the hardware, there are slight differences in components used (capacitors, memory ICs, etc), but any mention of International being inferior is just subjective otaku speak, and as such, is usually about $50 cheaper.

The warning screen displayed when you first start the game will tell you which region it is. And if the roms have been swapped for JPN, then there are usually some physical signs on the PCB that will indicate if its JPN region or not (components, logo, serial number, etc...).

Yes they are the same, because the top picture (which you got world-of-arcdes) is not a JPN PCB, its an International PCB.

That is an excellent price for international region Esprade.

For reference, here is a JPN Esprade board. Not much difference, other than different colored capacitors, "Atlus" silkscreen, and "ESP" serial number.

Yeah, the only one that's truly different is the Korean Donpachi board, which somehow is way more difficult. Apart from that you're good to go. :)
