PSP Shmups

Post by DazTM »

I've just started collecting for the PSP and am looking for a complete list of Shmups. So far I have Space Invaders Xtreme and the Gradius Collection but that's it.

I'm aware of the following
Parodious Collection
Salamander Collection
Twinbee Collection
Star Soldier Collection
Xyanide

But I'm not sure if there's any out there (particularly Japanese) that I should be looking out for.

Oops I already have Every Extend. That top one is a claymation type game right? Is it any good?

Off the top of my head there's Space Invaders Pocket (basically a series collection) and Sengoku Cannon to add to that list as well, though I haven't played either...then there's the "Yuna" collection, which has Sapphire on it.

You can get a demo of Xyanide Resurrection if you look around, but it's nowhere near as good as the Xbox original.

The new one is more of an arena shooter, and a repetitive one at that.

Is you machine hacked to play emulation?
If so it'll open your world and you'll have a machine that'll play more shmups then any other machine ever made, (short of a PC!)

Theres that one with the Gay men in it....

Zero Chou Aniki i think it is.

I (at least i think it was me) someone posted a list of all the possible shmups on the PSP. Obviously with CPS1 and 2, Neo Geo, SNES and PSX emulation (and not including the 8 bits - well except the MSX) - well theres a fair bit.

And they're - for the most part - very playable.

List :

Every Extend Extra (does this count?)
Space Invaders Extreme
Space Invaders Evolution
Space Invaders 2000
Patypus
Gradius Collection
Parodious Collection
Salamander Collection
Twinbee Collection
Star Soldier Collection
Star Soldier
Sengoku Aces 3
Ginga Ojousama Densetsu collection (contains PC Engine Sapphire)
Chou Aniki Zero
Xyanide

PSN based PSP games:
Everyday Shooter
Super Stardust

think there are a few more.

As per above , if you've "pandora'ed" your PSP you can throw a whole slew of shooters on their - Mars Matrix / Guwange / Harmfull Park / Rtype Delta / DoDonPachi etc on the go. It's good stuff! :D

Whats the emulation like in the PSP for the likes of MAME- will it run games like R-Type flawlessly or is it slow or glitchy?

Also, does it run PS1 games easily? -again -is the emulation any good?

Mame emulation i'm not sure about but R-type is okay on other formats (like the PS1).

CSP1, 2 and NG is very good - but thats my opinion. It may not be perfect for hardcore players but when i last played them there was little issues.

I must add that I use grips plus a Capcom Dpad which i'd recommend to anyone as it massively improves the PSP full stop.

Ps1 emulation is pretty good now but the games are huge. There are some variants which were ripped.
I ripped Square's Internal Section to something like 12mb down from something horrendous but you'll lose music so you may want to get one of those 2x16 GB adapters unless someone knows a better way to store PSP files.
Most PS1 shmups - certainly all the good ones work...

Harmful Park, Zanac X Zanac, Thunderforce V, TTenk, Darius Gaiden, G-Darius, Layer Section 2, Terra Diva, etc.

The added bonus is that because the PSP has a small screen, the details look better with 2D games as the pixels are reduced.

mame is in a sorry state unfortunately, but Final Burn Alpha is in a -partially- good state.

It certainly runs Cave stuff very very well, and has a tate mode too (although controls obviously take something of a hit)

As Afterbirth says, CPS1, 2 and NG are very very good indeed.
As also mentioned, PS1 is pretty much spot on but ripping the EBoots out does tend to send them upward of 500mb - though you can compress them down a little (or a lot if you want to remove movies/music/etc) - i hear there is away to compress further and wrap them as .CSO files, but not tried that.

I have on my list of "To do's" a project to put all the emus and shooters onto one stick. Mame is poor, SNES emulation is okay, whereas everything else is very good to excellent, so i guess it'll always be a moving target as emus get up to speed.

CSOs are normally compressed ISOS. Unless its changed PSP files come as "Eboot.psp" files and they are ripped rather then compressed.
But like i say, its been a while since i've mucked around. I think i'm still using M33t 3.71. V4 or something.

Suffice to say every PS1 shmup i can think of has been done now AFAIK - they're all out there.

Oh and don't forget the platform 2D shmups either.
Stuff like Mslug Anthology and Silhouette Mirage.

yup ps1 files are eboots, but apparently there is a way you can wrap eboots as iso's and use CISO Compress to take them down. I haven't done it myself, so not sure if that's the case. Does sound a little odd of course - though maybe it's some DarkAlex magic going on.

I spent days converting almost all my ps1 games (circa 400 titles or so) but yeah, pretty much everyone has been done - though Stahlfeder and Soukyugerentai failed to work for my rips. :/

Capcom Collection Remixed has a bunch of their old shooters, and is really inexpensive.
