For the Raiden PCB, correct it does not save highscores. If you are playing via Mame, you can save scores via the highscore.dat hack.

Works for me. Download hiscore.dat and put it in your root mame directory, and it should save scores from now on.

I use this with MAME Plus 0.129u2 and it works perfectly.

Thanks, didn't think the original board saved them.

When I was at the Circus Circus casino back in 1994-1995 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, they had a Raiden II cab with the USA version of Raiden II PCB but the really odd thing was that it would save high scores upon being powered down for the night. So the next morning, I checked out the Raiden II cab and lo behold, the high scores were still up. Easily over 2,000,000+ for all top ten scores with the same intials. I do recall seeing some Dynamo produced cabs that would actually save high scores on a PCB even if it didn't save high scores -- some kind of special interface that kept the power on to the PCB to save the high scores but turned off the rest of the cabinet. ^_~

Eventually I did end up acquiring a USA region Fabtek produced Raiden II PCB with said battery installed. The battery that is still on my Raiden II PCB, Seibu Kaihatsu was thinking about adding encryption to it's Raiden II/Raiden DX PCBs and using the battery to power it up (like how Capcom's CPS2 motherboard works with the "suicide" battery issue) but never did fully implement it according to fellow shmupper rtw. And all this time, I thought that the battery was a "back up" battery to save high scores but it was mainly for encryption purposes instead & never carried out. That explains why if you do get ahold of a Raiden II or Raiden DX PCB with installed battery..."you know the rest of the story". ^_~

Now that's interesting re Raiden II high score saving, because I understood that the saving does work on Raiden II until the original battery dies or is removed - even replacing it won't re-enable the high score saving ability, so it's a kind of suicide battery for high score saving on Raiden II.

So I'm now even more puzzled. :)

I've personally seen some Raiden II cabs that never did save high scores to begin with (they would always reboot with a default score of 50,000 points in the high score section of the screen when powered up) and that particular one at the Circus Circus casino did save high scores. I would've liked to have taken a peek to see how it worked though for saving high scores. Hmmm..... ^_~

Would be cool to find out exactly what their intentions were and how it all worked (or didn't!). Anyone know anyone from Seibu who we could ask? ;)
