Classic games you don't like.
Here's another!
Ys is not good. The gameplay is terrible (no, not "charming" or "quaint," terrible). The story is amusing even if it's nothing memorable and the music is awesome, but that doesn't make up for the horrid gameplay. I know people love it today because it was so impressive on the Turbo way back when, but anime and voice acting doesn't save it.

The only way I can ever beat that boss is by letting it time out. Which is do-able with or without weapons.MSZ wrote:Serious? Its one of the easiest Moai stage to recover in the series. If you die at the Maoi head boss in Gradius II, its over. All that work for nothing.
As Chunks said, you can time-out it and its not a hard thing to do.jp wrote:The boss part of the Moai stage? With the three heads, one on the bottom, one of the top, and one in front of you?
Maybe Gradius II and Gradius II Gofer are two different games... but with 4 lives left I couldn't kill those damn heads after they got a lucky shot off for the life of me.
EDIT: And yes I am talking about the arcade version - Gofer no yabou.
Well, I've got some more:
Any SNES game that uses the FX chip - I know the FX chip was a marvel of SNES engineering, but the limited technology made the games slow and unresponsive at times. 3D Graphics just weren't meant to be on the SNES (unless it involves Mode 7 somehow). Yoshi's Island did a pretty good job with the chip however.
Diablo II - I don't know how my dad can sit there and play this game for hours on end. It bores me to death, and I like games where you run around and hack monsters up.
Simanythings - Will Wright's games with no set goals and "God" gameplay never really clicked with me.
Final Fantasy 8 - The plot was stupid, the characters were dumb, and I absolutely hated having to steal magic from monsters for an hour just so I can boost my stats.
Super Mario World - I do agree with you sethsez, SMW was a slight disappointment compared to Mario 3. I still enjoyed the game however.
Mario 64 - It singlehandly killed the 2D platformer and gave rise to the dull 3D collect-a-tons.
Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat - I never really liked either game because I suck at fighting games and I don't see what is the big deal with them. Plus, MK is frugly.

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
I'd forgotten that one. The 'draw' magic idea was one of the very worst RPG stat systems in living memory. Endless milking to raise stats. I never want to play it again. Squall was a sad stereotype "hero" that you really didn't care about. I did like Quistis though.FatCobra wrote: Final Fantasy 8 - The plot was stupid, the characters were dumb, and I absolutely hated having to steal magic from monsters for an hour just so I can boost my stats.

I didn't care for FF8 all that much either. I'm not sure if it's really considered a classic, though.
BUHA, just becuase you don't like Zelda 2 doesn't mean that everyone who does like it is a fanboy or that people like it just becuase it's Zelda. I waded through two pages of topics in the Nintendo Legacy Boards and I didn't see many posts about Zelda 2. The only topic I saw about Zelda 2 was a help topic. In fact, there was a post about favorite NES games and I didn't see a single mention of Zelda 2 in that topic.
BUHA, you're "meloncholik", aren't you? If you are, you were way out of line in calling me a "whiney, oversenitive, sot". The matter was settled, so there was no need to add fuel to the fire. If you want to argue over this, PM me, but please keep it out of this topic.

I don't even know who or WHAT "meloncholik" is. I don't post on the legacy boards anymore, but when i did i was BUHA. There must be some mix-up with somebody else.BrianC wrote: BUHA, you're "meloncholik", aren't you? If you are, you were way out of line in calling me a "whiney, oversenitive, sot". And about Zelda 2, I really hate the game and it has nothing to do with you. If you like it then that's fine, just I didn't get any enjoyment out of it whatsoever. Thought it was awful.
EDIT: Awhile back all i saw on there was "zelda 2" topics, and they had lots of "favorite NES games" or "best NES games" and Zelda 2 was all over the place. I'm not making it up, I have no reason to lie. Go figure.

Guess I'm totally not smart then.
Xevious is just so boring and the ship's so slow and the levels (not that there really are any...) are bland and the ground-attack is annoying. Dragon Spirit did it all much better.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Super Castlevania IV
Probably one of the most uninspired entries in the series, complete with a tacked on play mechanic (the "limp whip") that doesn't even really come into play until the last boss battle. And what the hell is up with that boss battle, anyway? Did Konami waste so much memory on pointless rotating rooms that they didn't have an space left for a decent final battle? Dracula has traditionally always taken a second, demonic form, but no, what does he do here? He.. changes heads?
Get the fuck out of here.
This is also the easiest Castlevania I've ever played; to this day I can still beat it in one life without breaking a sweat. The graphics tend to be muddy in places, and while they are admittedly pretty detailed, the backgrounds have some of the worst colour schemes I've seen.
No, sir, I don't like it.

btw is that last line a homage to Ren and Stimpy's MR Horse

I also must be stupid! I've always enjoyed Galaga, even enough to say it's a great game, but Xevious has always seemed like a dog to me. It's probably because I played Galaga when i was little and grew up with it and i never really messed with Xevious. But i dont find it very fun at all.
I also dont understand what's so good about Castlevania IV. Seems really lame to me. Bloodlines is where it's at.

If I remember correctly, everytime you hit Slogra, he shot up into the air. You could typically hit him before he even landed from his jump. It was almost like a precursor to a juggle combo.SheSaidDutch wrote:Sloga (sp) is just unfairMoogs wrote:Super Castlevania IV

And, yes, that was indeed Mr. Horse.
Great graphics, extremely cool level concepts and design - that's the appeal. Granted, it was far too memorization based.sethsez wrote:Along similar lines, Ghosts n' Goblins sucks. If a game is hard due to terrible, limited controls, it's not a good game. I never got the appeal.
I'm pretty sure that I'm the world's number one ranked Xevious player. I don't really like the game anymore, but I am so fucking radical at it so I won't let myself quit playing.

wow i am in the minor. also, while it may sound like excuses, i really only tried Super Xevious and Arrange. played arrange and super first and couldn't be bothered to go back into original mode, it took too long to die, and i am just not comfortable with that. i better just withdraw my unserious "if-then," because after all when everyone is stupid but me, i'm the one with the problem.
I have no sig whatsoever.
Alrighty then, the reason I said that SNK fighting games stink is because I've played them.Capt. Takehiko wrote:When you give an opinion you must back it up with a reason. I'd also be interested to see which ones you do not think "stink".PaCrappa wrote:SNK fighting games pretty much all stink.
MotW, RBS Are awesome. KE and AoF3 have a certain charm and for some reason I haven't sold my KoF 98 or 99 carts yet. The only ones I ever play because it's me that wants to are RBS and MotW. Even the ones that have that 'certain charm' are basically just pretty 2D junk. As are most Neo Geo games. Ninja Combat, Cyber Lip, all of the shooters except Blazing Star. All of it stinks. Other than the super neato bigass NGH cartridges, I never did see what was so attractive about the Neo Geo in general. Magician Lord sucks!
Xevious totally blows. I hated that game from day one. Gauntlet, while being a total staple of my arcading youth, has nor aged well. PaCrappa needs food. I also always hated Mortal Kombat. Gradius seems to be less and less my cuppa tea every year. I really liked the first one on NES and III for SNES in their respective heydays. Is Half Life a classic? If so put that one on my list. I played this game for hours before realizing that as open minded as I try to be it is merely one of those FPS games and I don't like FPS games. All Metal Gear games, past to present, are fucking booty. Every one of them has sucked beyond belief. When I played Doom for the first time I was like, "this is stupid". I still say the same about that game and all of its sequels. F-Zero is dumb. NBA Jams or whatever was HUGE in my neighborhood. Sad, because that game always sucked. Toejam and Earl is beyond a stupid waste of time. While I definitely don't hate them, the Streets of Rage games are generally overrated.

Castlevania IV may not be the hardest Castlevania, but it's generally well liked becuase of the great level design, excellent controls, and cool bosses (not just becuase of the whip thing or the fact that one of the levels rotates). The ability to aim the whip in eight directions rocks too. I personally love the game and I was surprised to see it bashed so much here. I'm certain I'm not in the minority of liking it, but I thought the general opinion was that it was one of the better games in the series. Bloodlines is a great game, but I'm perplexed at how it suddenly became one of the best of the series, even over Rondo of Blood for some people. I thought Rondo of Blood was generally considered the best in the series.Moogs wrote:Super Castlevania IV

I didn't much like CV4 either. The design was uninspired, especially the bosses... it seemed like that golem, for instance, only existed to serve up even more Mode 7 buffoonery after that atrocious series of spinning rooms/rooms with Mario World blocks. I only liked levels 1, 2, 9, and B, although the music was consistently rad.
There are a few other SNES "classics" I'm not too fond of, too, including Axelay, Space Megaforce, and Zelda III.

Well, it seems like the majority of users at shmups.com seem to hate it and I want to know what the deal is. Never before have I seen so much hate for the game. I really hate the general bashing of mode 7 I'm seeing here. It seems to be that some games are being hated just becuase they have mode 7 in them. Yeah, there are games that are poor and rely too much on it, but making blanket statments that accuse anyone that likes games like F-Zero or Super Castlevania IV as being fanboys when they clearly aren't is very messed up.sethsez wrote:General opinion is that it's one of the best in the series. Well, for me it's just kind of clunky. The art doesn't really have much style compared to earlier games (with their simple charm) or later games (with their better artistry), so it looks like like Castlevania and more like a generic game with a whip. And the level design really smacks of gimmickry at points.
Personally, I just found every other game in the series more compelling in one way or another.

My post wasn't aimed at you. I'm just curious how Castlevania IV suddendly became the worst game in the series and how Bloodlines suddendly became the best. I found both games to be great, but why can't somelike like both games instead of dissing one when liking the other?sethsez wrote:Well, for me it's just kind of clunky.
