Reflex, was the beta known as "Reflection" ?
Nah I don't think so(correct me if I'm wrong)
It was. I still have the beta on my computer, same stages and mechanics. though Reflection is naturally much rougher.

Speaking of freeware games no one has mentioned, where's the love for G-TYPE???

There's a hellsinker wiki but it's in japanese. There are small bits of basic hellsinker info around here and there but complete english guide doesn't seem to exist right now. The most important things like secrets and scoring system aren't really explained in english anywhere. I've been thinking of starting one lately.

Well, at just a quick peak at ether vapor, it was slow as balls on default settings. I havent had time to mess with it yet. Granted its running on this compact pc i nabbed from work that was collecting dust. But still its a 1.7 p4 1 g ram, not sure about video card. Its funny bc i have to run mame games on autoskip frames (sound echoes etc.) and my main pc is 1.75 , 1.5 g ram (heh) and they run fine with no skipping. This is with all programs wiped (on the compact), barely anything processing. I hope this isnt an issue with the flatscreen? Blue wish is great so far, checking out others soon.

the problem with that game is that it requires a good accelator card, if you dont have any, it will lag like hell...

now, about reflection and Reflex... it's been a long time since last time i played Relfection (like 4-6 years or something like that), but i remember that one had only 3 levels, the lasers weren't quite the wyay they are in reflex,it ran on older machines flawlessly (obviously)... but it was really, REALLY good to play it... but i got stuck with kamui, sicne it was the full version, and i dont like to play demos that much.

Oh crap, how could I have forgotten this one?!

TYPHOON 2001

http://typhoon.kuto.de/

Easily one of the best freeware shmups available, period. Think of it as revamped Tempest on crack, with tons of options such as:

- 3 different level modes to choose from... Tempest, Tempest 2000, and Typhoon

- 3 different scoring modes to choose from... Classic, Combo, and Typhoon

- crazy graphics

- TONS of levels (100 or more?)

Very addictive game, although the difficulty becomes quite extreme the more you play.

...anybody who smokes weed should play this game, along with any Geometry Wars title, LOL.

Bastards who didn't mention MAJOR STRYKER

and also Guxt; that game is amazing. Short and easy though.

On account of its inventive (yes rly) stage designs, features, and perfect aesthetic design, I almost put Guxt in my 25. True story.

Did I ever mention that recently I played through the first two episodes of MAJOR STRYKER, going through the whole episode, and the final scores were within a few thousand of each other, out of a million or so points? That's quality talking, right thur.

Fraxy is constantly getting new updates with more features and as a result, even stuff like this is possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL7zWdDCtOE&fmt=18 (skip to 3:00 for the fight)

Compare that to the stock bosses you had in the older versions :P

My favourites on PC: Trouble Witches and the Airrade-series
from Studio Siesta. Maybe not the deepest gameplay - but I
like games more simple.

( Has the US-Version of Trouble Witches been released ? ).

Typhoon 2001 grabs lots of Tempest/Tempest 2000 levels. I don't think it has every single one, but I do think it has Tempest Tubes tubes (unless those are the Typhoon tubes, haven't tried them yet).

Either way, it has at least 100 levels or so... that's more than enough to be worth a grab. The gameplay is excellent, and challenge never ceases to exist.

About the selectable level modes.. like I've previously mentioned, there are 3 to choose from - Tempest, Tempest Tubes, and Typhoon.

T2K1 is still one of the best free shmups out there for PC, and easily one of the most versatile.
