Axelay vs M.U.S.H.A
Axelay vs M.U.S.H.A
In your opinion, which is the better: Axelay (SNES) or M.U.S.H.A (Genesis) ?

Nah, that was probably your thread. Hope that was a trollpost, if so good job.nimitz wrote:The straw that broke the camel's back.BulletMagnet wrote:I'll let this thread stand, but for future reference, we've had a lot of rather flaky "which shmup do you like better?" threads lately, and I'd rather not see too many more for awhile.
Actually, the first one of these (Gradius vs. R-Type) was bad enough.

It was? I musta not been paying attention.No_not_like_Quake wrote:Axelay has an emotionally draining intro. I dare you not to be in tears by the title screen. The planet was destroyed!
Anyway, it's OK to call it just "Musha Aleste," since that iz de original name. The US distributors just wiped off Toaplan's name (I wonder what they did anyway) and made Musha into a silly acronym.

Exactly my opinion. Axelay is hugely overrated and a control horror. Musha is really unremarkable although subtly entertaining.PepsimanVsJoe wrote:Personally I think Axelay is a badly designed piece of shit.
MUSHA kind of sucks as well.
Can we throw in a third option for a kick to the balls?
I wasn't going to vote, but then, like with women, when the brain's not there I just vote for the prettiest. At least it's something that makes one prevail on the other.

Axelay's "3D" stages are ugly, not very interesting, crippled with iffy hit detection, and not as enjoyable as the game's side-view stages. If it had been all side-view, then the game would be a lot better to me. M.U.S.H.A. however, despite it's easiness, is more enjoyable from start to finish, has better stage progressions, has more interesting stages in general, and is simply put together better... again, to me.
The SNES game is good, but the Genesis game beats it on just about all levels.

I just can't get into Axelay. The overhead levels have that ugly mode 7 madness going on, and the sidescrolling stages are just OK. I also hate it when shmups switch between the 2. Maybe i'll give it another spin again sometime....
M.U.S.H.A. has it's problems(mainly with stage length), but the overall look, sound, and gameplay is very good. Definitely Compile's best.

I actually kinda like Axelay, and don´t think it´s over hyped. (as that would require at least a bit of hype - and I personally never saw any
))

I suppose you can´t argue with someone´s taste, but I actually think these levels are quite pretty. I actually had wished the whole game consisted of these levels, as I like them better than the horizontal ones.evil_ash_xero wrote:

Well, those threads keep people talking and having fun talking of specific random shmups for a limited period of time, without resuming huuuuuuuge topics where everything's been said. Makes you think a bit about shmups from a different perspective, that is, confronting them with another similar shmup (similar of style, or age, or console...).D wrote:Indeed. It's fun for people who think it's fun, and judging by the amount of replies, a good share of people do.
This is not a quantum phisics enthusiasts forum, let it go. Forums are supposed to be discussion places.

I agree, as long as we don't get flooded with these X vs Y threads.
Maybe 1 every 2 weeks and letting nimitz continue the series he started?

No need for periods. Isn't 武者 romanized musha anyway?No_not_like_Quake wrote:M.U.S.H.A. (what a pain in the ass to type)
I agree with Fenrir, since we never talk about anything anyway. And what better way to fuel your nostalgia than for the forum to answer those age old questions? Putting it all in one thread would be more bloated than having seperate threads for each challenge, in my opinion. However, also in my opinion, good challenging matches should be made. So far, all made threads seem to qualify for this.
Musha and Axelay? Never saw that coming, but it fits. I think I'll vote for Salamander 2.
Thats exactly the point behind these topics. To have people explain what they think makes a shmup better than another and *maybe* expand people's horizons.Fenrir wrote:Well, those threads keep people talking and having fun talking of specific random shmups for a limited period of time, without resuming huuuuuuuge topics where everything's been said. If the forum was overflowing with shmup discussion these threads would have no purpose, but it's not the case.
That being said, I agree that these threads can get stale pretty fast if we make too many

I enjoy these well-chosen shmup battles, though things could quickly get out of hand. Especially if they become ill-conceived.
I hate when everyone thinks a shmup is easy and I don't. It has been years since I played MUSHA, and maybe I'd find it easy now, but my recollection is that it was hard to recover when you die and lose power-ups.
Still, I have to favor it over Axelay, which I never quite got. (I own it, I mean "got" in that other sense.)

Yeah, MUSHA is not as easy as all that. It's not 'hard', but it's certainly well beyond TF3 level difficulty. Too much shmup machismo around these parts.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
