Space Megaforce/Super Aleste Comments Please

Post by mjclark »

After raving on about Star Soldier Vanishing Earth I took a break and started playing Super Aleste. I was surprised at how complex the game mechanics were and ended up downloading a walkthrough (http://uk.faqs.ign.com/articles/368/368760p1.html) before I could properly get my head round it.
Anyway it blows the pants off Musha but what does anyone else reckon to it?

It's a good game, but even if it gave you a blow job it would not be as good as MUSHA, sorry.

Amazing game.

Especially on the Super Nintendo hardware, where shooters have typically run with slow and choppy… Space Megaforce plays like it is on another system. I find the game play alot like Blazing Lazers.

I still am partial to MUSHA, at least the music is leagues better. Both are fine games though and have their own style which make them both outstanding.

Compile wins again.

Space Megaforce is one of those "blow your mind" games that remains playable forever.

Power-ups to the people!

Maybe if MUSHA could make a decent cup of coffee and do the washing up every now and then I'd consider it...

I just tried this game out for the first time, was pleasantly surprised. I don't like MUSHA a whole lot but this reminds me a lot more of Zanac and compile's earlier stuff than MUSHA did. I also like that you can't die by smacking the walls!

Compile games with 'suicide bullet' modes > those without. -3?/Lunatic > MUSHA.

Speaking on the music alone, I'd be willing to say any Aleste game has a leg up over Musha. Then again that could just be because I can't stand anything the 2612 chip can produce.

Wow, what is this from? Is this just a screen render from someone's imagination? Aleste never looked this good on SNES! (:

I love the whole series. I had a lot of fun with aleste, but there are a couple of things that unfortunately werent thought out. Such as unlimited lives on one of the later bonus stages. Just score over 500k i believe, get the free life and die. Another boss you can just sit and milk. Other than that. Great game.

Yeah, Space Megaforce is pretty cool, but it imo goes from being a bit easy on normal to having some recovery issues on hard mode.. but.. you tried Spriggan on PCE? I got it on my emulator, and immediately went out and bought the real disc =) Awesome stuff.

Hahaha I like how you comment on your new found shmupping possibilities, like a child who found the storeroom-key to a Toys R' us. cute.

Be sure to check out Final Soldier too. Nice game.

My favorite 16-bit shooter, one of my top 25, and one of the games that really got me into the genre. Not sure what else to add, really.

mjclark, try Psycho Chaser. It's no prize winning shmup by far, but it'll change things up a bit for you, and who knows, maybe you'll like it as much as I did. It's one of my favorite shmups.

If you'd like I can message you with all the shmup titles available for the PCE

This. Also, it was my personal Compile favorite until I discovered Power Strike II SMS.

Even if you dislike the game for some reason, Super Aleste still ranks very high in terms of videogame music.

Figures i get beat on for saying super aleste is fun, but when the guy in blackface says it's okay, well...

Anyhow, yeah, it is a decent game. Doesn't have the "style" of MUSHA but there's less reliance on whoop de doo graphics effects and vertical parallax, and more on good stage design. At least in the first stage that is - the Mode 7 stage is just...well.

Been on the lookout for a good copy of this for a long while, surprising that it doesn't show up more often.

Basically, it's just the port ever.
Also; can't believe people prefer MUSHA over this.

And it's called Super Aleste.

I will grant that Super Aleste is a better challenge, but the stages tend to be a little lengthy and uneventful for my taste. But why not play both at the same time?

Yeah, it's very good! It sounds more like an Amiga soundtrack than a SNES one.. I guess I associate SNES soundtracks with stock GMish sounds which dated badly =) Because of the tunes and a lot of the style (including vert corridors), I thought it was a euro game for a long time

Compile made a bad game?

Hmmmm.....

Power Strike 1/2
Zanac
The Guardian Legend
Blazing Lazers
Space Megaforce
MUSHA
Zanac Neo

I don't see anything bad on that list.

Would you recommend the SNES for shmups? Got the console a long time ago and sold it. I guess Super Aleste is a great game and all (never played it) but considering how dry this system is with what we like to play the most... can't make up my mind. I think I'll be better off getting a PC Engine.

Hmmmm....I think Saturn would be a better deal for joo than SNES or TG-16.

The SNES has a great library overall and a handful of nice shooters, but I wouldn't recommend buying it primarily for shmupping.
