The forum was moderated by idiots at the time. Concept was a very sneery pompous type of person anyway and absolutely refused to acknowlege his review was deficient in any way before or after Stu insulted him.
Stu doesn't generally insult people randomly. He just responds to people in the same tone as they talk to him, and because he's better at being rude to people everybody seems to see his reposte as totally out of proportion.
I mean, it's a fucking internet forum. The way people were acting in that NGF thread was hilarious. They're all moralising instead of having any proper arguments. When did everybody get so sensitive?

I dunno why you're defending him. I'll concede that he's moderately intelligent, but not a very talented writer or he wouldn't constantly have to go on forums to clarify what he means. Even the dull should be able to understand you if you're eloquent. It's a shame, because it seems like he could improve on that, but it appears that he gets a kick out of feeling superior and being controversial, so he'll probably just stay the way he is

So he's basically Icy without the Wittgenstein fetish.
But Icy never made the best soccer game of his day.
Also, I find Stuart's game reviews somewhat more refreshing - not perfect - but they seemed to be more topical than Icy's. Which isn't saying a lot because I've had little experience of either gentlemans' works.
Retro Gamer is pretty lame. It's a magazine so desperately trying to be Edge; only failing. And believe me, I hardly think Edge is the benchmark in videogame commentary - though sadly, it probably is about as good as it gets over here Although mainly just by default...

...but neither did he have a hand in an abysmal sequel to a fantastic game that got to #1 purely on the strength of the original game (HI CANNON FODDER 2).
I quite like Stuart Campbell's writing though (and am LOVING that thread on Neogeo.com - and just had a conversation with the other half about the technical difference between zombies and mummies Especially lovin' the fact that the OP thought the ( -Ed) comment was real). I was a big AP fan back in the day.

Trying to be Edge? I don't get that. Edge is dryer than unbuttered toast. RG is a mag written for classic gamers, by classic gamers, and the fact that it has lasted as long as it has means I can more easily forgive the odd flaw or error here and there.

i can say with some authority that at least some of the homebrew reviews aren't trying to be like Edge... =-)
