EDIT: STV machines in the U.S.?

I have ranted a few times about how poor arcade cab selection here in North Dakota is. You're lucky if you can find a Raiden or 1943 cabinet.

Well, imagine my surprise on Sunday when I went to a sports bar/grill here in town with some friends and found two good shmup cabs. I hadn't been to the place to eat for a year, the last time I was there they only had typical stuff like 3D rafting or snowboarding games. This time, they had a ton of nice Namco sit down cabs. My jaw dropped when I saw that they had Soukyugurentai and Sengoku Blade (titled there as Sengoku Ace II of course). They also have several 2D fighters now in the Namco sit down cabs.

I got stomped on Souky (high score ont he cab was over 6 million), playing games on a Saturn pad has spoiled me and turned me into a scrub when it comes to an arcade stick. The few times I played Sengoku Ace II I loved it, I may well buy the Sat rev now (never thought an arcade in ND would be where I'd play it for the first time).

Anyhoo, it can't be too common to see an STV shooter like Souky in the U.S. can it (the game had all Japanaese text except for general menu/score, even the title was in Jap, I seriously doubt anyone but me there who has played it knows the game's name :p ) ? Maybe it's just a fluke or maybe the guy who is in charge of the aracde at the grill has a Saturn and some import games like me.

It's probably the same deal as the Namco arcade at Springfield Mall in VA who have the Japanese Gunbird 2 sit-down cab (which Japanese flyers and control explanations)... the games are no doubt cheap to obtain and they're good play-time wise (as in, most folks don't last too long in them, meaning more quarters dropped into the machine).

Kinda what I figured too. That 6 million score in Souky has me wondering though, do STV boards save scores? I have to to think very few if any people here in my home town know how to manipulate rank.

It seriously though is just so cool to find two gems like that in a midwest arcade. I thought the first time I'd play Sengoku Blade would be at home on my Saturn (or PS2), NOT in a town in ND.

I'll bet the owner of the games collects shmups at home, then puts them in public cabs. That's what I used to do (when I had more public cabs).

STV's have a battery like a saturn, that's surely for saving scores. They save them till you change the game, so maybe he bought the board and cart together and it's a Japanese score?

Now will someone explain the Zero Gunner 2 Machine that's at my local Pizza Parlor?
This is freaking Podunk Arizona. How does a relativly obscure import Naomi Shmup end up here?

I'll bet you're right. BTW, what sort of shmups did you put in public outlets? I'm curious.

In any case, the sports center/grill is closing as of yesterday. Doggone it. I won't be able to have their buffalo chicken breast in between Souky scoring rounds asI was so looking forward to. That was gonna be my new lunch spot.

Which is about 140 miles north of Phoenix.
Phoenix, I wouldn't be wierded out by.
But Flagstaff is just barely more than a small town, with hicks that rent billboards to advertise Jesus on the outskirts.

Things like that you shouldn't question.

There are bigger towns out there that don't even have a shmup in any arcade!

If you can track down the owner, wouldn't hurt to ask him what he's going to do with the cab. It might just be sold to someone else in town.

zero gunner 2 isnt an obscure import, it's the most widespread arcade shooter for some years now.

at least in europe (swiss, france)

I've brought most of my cabs home over the last year, but I used to put lots of cool stuff out, and switch them every couple of months. some of the more recent ones were pulstar, hotdog storm, soukyugurentai, ESPrade, Mars Matrix, Giga Wing, Strider 2, Radiant Silvergun, Raiden FIghters Jet..
I've got a pretty big collection of those and had about 5 genereic cabs in bars around town- I'd just switch them up. (I live in Salt Lake City, Utah)

But alas, I've been bringing them home over tha last year (at the bars requests) and now all I have out are a Ghost's n Ghoblin'g at a sandwich shop and a neo geo 6 slot at one bar.
