It knocked my socks off, although it was a hori

R-Type III of course. I know the classic Air Garret line wouldn't seem to fit, but then we have a giant enemy mech getting a huge steel beam/wall rammed into his hind end. Man, that first stage was intense.

I've kind of been following along the shmups scene for a while but obviously MAME- and emurater-centrism leads to a certain kind of tunnel vision. R-Type is a possible example, in my case, of that, although it's not actually caused by emulators (wait what am I saying? Oh well). Only days ago I finally decided to try out Super R-Type to see what the cartridge I bought long years ago played like; needless to say, I decided right then that the series must've died with R-Type II (kind words about Delta notwithstanding). I was vaguely aware there was something after that title, but I also sort of expected (and as I wrote this I had to check just to be sure) that there would be a lame followup named "Super R-Type II" which would have a music track called "Counterattack '92."

Number III, the fresh sequel for the series made when Irem (and hopefully everybody else) realized "eeyyy we aren't making SUPER games for Nintendo, we're making GOOD games," really intrigues me: Jaleco worked on it apparently (the same Jaleco that seems to have taken more than subtle inspiration for their own EDF, and the very Jaleco behind Cybattler and Ninja Kazan, who could forget those?). The graphics are easily arcade-quality and it has extra animation over its big brothers, even; and the music ain't so terrible. More importantly, it has that inventive level design that so many of us like in a horizontal shooter, and which made Irem famous (alongside their racing shooters like Gallop and Moon Patrol). Not boring like Gradius Galaxies. Not just (apologies to Rob, and I guess this is showing my ignorance) just enemies and bullet patterns, like Biometal *seems to be* after playing it only so far.

I died a few times in the first half of the first stage in emulation; then sailed through the whole rest of the stage without dying once. That's not due to the stage being crap or something (although a very straightforward SNES- and Genesis-era "hey look at stuff in the foreground" section couldn't have hurt my lifespan); walls often slam into place at high speed in this stage, but it seemed that they had enemies placed so that you'd be likely to have no business anywhere near the dangerous spots. Funny, but it impressed the heck outta me.

Can't handle stage two yet; don't have the USB Saturn pad Ceph found for $21 or the actual cartridge yet, either of which will be more than acceptable.

End transmission

R-Type III was my favorite shmup BEFORE I got into shmups...now I just hate it. It's sooooo slow paced, and the second half of stage 4 is frustrating as hell.

I thought it was "blow your socks off".

R-Type III's fun. I almost 1CCed the thing a couple of years ago; died somewhere in the final stage. Head's up, this game has three loops.

Welcome to 1993 8)

In its defence, R-Type III had some pretty graphics, but playing it now is pretty torturous.

I'm sure it has three. There's an "advanced mission", and then there's some other advanced mission ("expert mission"?). That third loop was craaazy.

I beat it when I was younger. I only remember 2 loops, could there be a few versions?

I thought the game was very stylistic. the first level's pizazz turns into patient boredom. The lava tube level turns from pure torture to 'thank god I've memorised that'.
I thought some of the in between levels were amazing. Great last level boss compilation.

Excellent graphics and presentation though-- I mean, seriously, the inside of my own engine before I start?

Nope, just two. And I've single-credit cleared both. Maybe you're thinking of Super R-Type.
Of course, that's just an opinion.
