PC shmup Astrobatics...

Post by dave4shmups »

I love this shmup, I never thought I'd have so much fun playing a shmup with a mouse, since I'm usually stuck to a d-pad. But this one is fantastic!! It's done by Kraisoft: http://www.kraisoft.com/

Errhghmmm. Why?

For a minute in reminded me of an Genesis shmup but its nothing like an Gensis shmup. Well not a good one anyway.

Theres at least a ton of decent PC shmups really. I appreciate thats kinda sacrilege around these parts....but there is.

But anyway it has no redeeming features from what i played. No score mechanics, a health bar, it scrolls bad and the programmers haven't really grabbed the concept of animation.

Aside, you could download Xpadder to play it with a joypad although it'll probably suffer from mouse inertia like all these mouse driven shmups usually do.

Well, what are some better PC shmups? I'm looking for traditional, not bullet-manic stuff.

i remember playing this back in '03 and loving it.
it takes a lil gettin used to the mouse control, but when you get it, its a breeze to play.

the game gets harder in the later levels, but its definitively doable... i hoped for them to make a sequel, but it never happened. thank god theres new doujin every year for me to play.

Did you try "Jets'n'Guns gold" from Rake in Grass? I LOVE this game.

I just did, and it rocks! I'll have to get this for our PC! :D

Ok, I downloaded Xpadder and configured my controller, and it won't work with this game? :?:

Well, there's Cho Ren Sha, which is a shmup with fairly heavy patterns [but feels way less like a bullet hell type shmup than it should, the speed of the bullets may account for this]

Google for it, it's really easy to find.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

First set up your joypad :
download a picture of your pad (or any pad - it doesn't have to be the same as long as it has the same number of buttons and Axis) .

Add the Image, Sticks, buttons, etc. Then save that joypad.

Then select a new GAME profile (on the right)

Click on a direction button for your stick, then when the keyboard appears click on the relevant mouse direction. Repeat for all 4 axis.
Then do same for buttons (A and B for mouse Buttons 1 and 2 in my case as i have a 360 pad)

Save. Ensure you keep Xpadder open when you play the game (or at least minimise it).

All works fine here and for any shmup that doesn't properly support your drivers.

As for games...i'll give you 10...or so.

Bike Banditz
Absolute Blue
Air Rade series
Trouble Witches
Angel Destroyer
Armed Seven
Cloudphobia
Cybernoid 3 Phoenix
Cy-Clone
Exception
Galshell
Growing...
Heavy Weapon (Okay...not a flying shmup).

Theres a good few others (and they're all Hori shmups).
Some of that is a bit manic - Jets N Guns is quite hard at times until you power up and then it gets amazing.

You also must try "Steel Saviour", a.k.a. "T-Zwei" It's not as good as Jets'n'Guns, but in my opinion it's a decent shmup (euroshmup if you prefer) with gorgeous graphics, but VERY difficult.

And... keep an eye on this thread:

very less known russian shmup developer, i play some of their game from my childhood with crappy pc.......sadly kraisoft didn't have their product marketing so their games are just nowhere, but suprised me alots that the studio still live well until now!

astrobatic is mediocre clone of Gradius

but Atomader, especially Atomader 2 is pretty good, a HD beatifully graphic Galaga with some creative parts added!

also i remember Alien Sky, the very slow firing which most people hate require you to aim accurately, and then those 2 shmups with no life bar, just 1 hit death, no euroshmups ,balanced gameplay, score rush fun, made with vodka!
the alien sky is more hell difficult in later levels  i can't still beat Alien Sky with 1CC, only Atomaders 2......even still see no one on youtube do that!

the main composer of the kraisoft a big talent with his massive midi soundtrack work, but again, that guy hide under shadow as well!
