Edge Magazine Shooter Company Feature

Post by ill6 »

As the title says, interviews with G. Rev, Milestone and Triangle Service.

They seem somewhat out of date (esp TS) as it talks about the upcoming Trizeal port.

Somewhat interesting; I like the fact that Edge does not shy away from talking about Noami, AW and Type X arcade hardware but they spoil it by bringing up questions about next generation consoles and PSP/DS... Neither is really relevent to these developers as they are Arcade developers.

That said one did mention Nintendo were more inclined to work with smaller teams in keeping with their Revolution one man band programming idea; maybe that will be the console of choice for shooters?

Edge

Post by DEL »

Hmm...That seems like a must have issue. The last issue had absolutely no references to 2d shoot'em ups whatsoever & generally Edge follows the mainstream pseudo 3D game line religiously. Having said that, they do report shooters like Ibara & Mush & have even made a reference to quote; "shmuppers" in a write up (I can't remember which one? - was it the Mushihimesama report??) - They may have been referring to this site - I dunno :?:

Anyway, thanks for the heads up ill6! I'll browse it.
See you soon in the arcade

The articile is six pages long with 2 pages for each developer. I find it quite intresting that none of the companies (G.Rev, Milestone & Triangle Service) have any intrest in developing for the Type X hardware as it's too expensive and that they really like the Naiomi system. So it's a stong possability that we will see more Naiomi based software from all these developers for a couple of years to come.
Oh and the CEO of G.Rev sounds like a really cool bloke. :)

I always got the feeling that Edge was always pro shooting games, and that there are some fans that work there.

They did a feature a while back on the reamergance of hi score gaming and I think they mentioned shmups then, but mainly just twin galaxies.

Recently some awful uk games rag did a famous bad guy's in games feature and included DDPDOJ's bullet storms as one of them :o

Maybe the tide is turning...

Edge also did a large feature on Doujin shooters. They gave Gradius V a 9/10 which is frankly  :D saying it was of the best games of 2004. They preview all the new cave games and gave Dodonpachi & Espgaluda an 8. Expect a review of Mushihimesamma in 2 months time.

Agreed. :)

And I am definitely gonna buy this issue. Here's hoping they eventually review a heavy hitter like Cave (assuming they aren't opposed to being asked questions by UK gaijin :P ).

The DC is the Other Little White Engine That Could, along with the PCE.

There's plenty of old-school fans that work there. "Red-Eye" (now sadly not writing a regular column for EDGE) came to the MAME forums a couple of years back attempting to get us to stand up to the DMCA/EUCD/whole copyright thing, pretty mis-guided but cool none-the-less.

My subscription copy including the above interviews turned up this morning, pretty cool. Although I imagine they sent the same questions out to every small developer they could think of (I imagine Cave and Treasure got a copy too :)).

Great article, hoped it would be a bit longer, but at least I have a little more faith that someday I will release a commercial game, hopefully Nintendo will embrace more small developers with future hardware.

Games TM is not a very good magazine, in fact the only thing that redeems it is the, frankly magnificent Retro section.[/quote]

If that's the case why not just get Retro Gamer.

Last I heard that was supposed to be a false rumor. I thought the game-god was working for Walmart's online wing.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

I have to agree, it's awful.
And immensely hypocritical.

Like the time they "reviewed" an emulated bootleg version of "SNK Vs Capcom" just as it was released and tried to pass it off as the real thing whilst elsewhere in the magazine warning about the illegalities of emulation of old titles.

The retro section tends to be a mix of news cribbed straight from the front pages of retro sites interspersed with 80's console reviews. It's okay, but is nowhere near good enough to bring it into the same league as EDGE (Although I agree that at times you have to take it wit a pinch of salt, I miss RedEye although Mr Biffo is nearly as fab :)

Ste Curran appears to confirm that he wrote at least some of the columns (and definitely some of the better ones), see:
