Did you know that sometimes you can find some good shmup levels in some action/platform games..
In Adventures of Batman and Robin (MEGADRIVE/GENESIS) there is some kind of R-TYPE level..Did somebody played it??
In Xiad Sleena (arcade) when you finish a jump 'n run level you jump in your ship and blast your way to the next level.
Also check out all METAL SLUG games for levels where you have to control a FAT FUNNY LITTLE PLANE and do some shooting..
-Kirby's Adventure (NES, part of the final poss fight?)
-Captain America and the Avengers (Data East, Arcade, this one has a couple of them)
-Gunstar Heroes
I love that one level in Shinobi III (Genesis) where you're falling towards the ground, while at the same time throwing shurikens at oncoming ninjas. That level is kinda like a shmup, even though the screen is vertically scrolling downwards.

I've heard that there's also a shmup section in the latest Kirby game for the GBA. I'm forgetting the game's title just now-- something with 'mirror' in it?

There's shumping in the very first Kirby's Dreamland for GB too. The title of the latest GBA Kirby is Kirby and the Amazing Mirror.
Mega Man V GB, Battletoads GB, and Dynamite Headdy also have shmup stages.

I don't remember anything like that in Shinobi III/Super Shinobi II, but that describes bonus round in Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi for the Genesis to a tee.
In this category,Metal Slug 3 is king. There are some very cool hori-shmup levels, notably the underwater sub-marine level ala In the Hunt, and even one vert-shmup segment that resemble Space Invaders!
Oh yeah,SD Gundam:Psycho Salamander also feature shmups-like levels.
Heh, one of my faves is a level from the obscure PSX platformer Kaette kita Cyborg Kuro-chan -- it's got some awesomely cute shmup tributes in it! Great game overall btw, the weaponry is great fun, and they powerup to the point of insanity. The levels are a pushover once you power-up your weapons, but that's the same as the Rockman X's too, though it doesn't stop it from being fun. The bosses also feel like you're fighting some kind of Rockman X bosses. Fun as hell. The last boss is the highlight of the game, pure fucking brilliance :P The music is also a highlight. You must play this game if you like fast-paced explosive Rockman-X-esque shooting platform action games :P
Also, who could forget Rami-chan's shmup levels on the Saturn.
Tailspin on the Mega Drive. The shmup sections were only mildly less shite than the platform bits. Christ, that game was incredibly rubbish.
Castle of Illusion and Aladin were wonderful platformers but Tailspin, Fantasia and whatsherface the Mermaid definately made me wary of liscenced games at an early age.
There were definately other games that had proper shmup levels. Can't think of them at the moment though.
In zx spectrum games:
Short circuit: it includes a hidden mini space invaders clone playble in a computer using coins.
Vega solaris: it's an unreleased Spanish game. When the computer is loading from tape, you can play other mini space invaders clone.
Relatively easy up until those sodding blue wave things that criss cross the screen. If, by some miracle I survive that, death is rapidly approaching in the form of bullet spam from hell that is his final attack
Gunbird 2 1-5 Boss
I can't put into words how much I hate this dude
And also Galuda's level 2 boss
He ain't hard, but that won't stop him taking a life off you

Woops. You're right. It was Shadow Dancer. A fun bonus level that's a little shmup'ish, IMO.
There's a pretty obscure Japanese PC action/rpg called Fray 3 in which the final boss battle is done shmup-style. The rest of the game is a fairly ordinary Ys-like game. They even made an offshoot (har har ) shmup game using the sprites from Fray 3 a few months later.
