Call me a stupidly optimistic, but I was actually looking forward to seeing DNF. All the teasers, occasional screenshots and whatnot, gave me some small glimmer of hope that the sequel might actually turn out to be a decent FPS. Not great or spectacular, but at least decent.

Hope someone picks this up and brings the long running saga of DNF to a close with a release... preferably before we all die on 12/12/2012, at 12:12PM.

One thing I find very hilarious, is they haven't released a single screenshot or video of the "game". They've all been mock ups of what a game could possibly look like, if they had actually been making a game.

Such an elaborate, legendary prank..

Update: Joe Siegler, otherwise known as Joe3d aka King Douchebag aka one of the biggest douchebags on the internet aka the webmaster for 3drealms, is asking for some assistance. I never liked Joe but he has a kid on the way. This is one situation that breaks my heart: To lose your job just as you have a kid on the way...

ive seen that and it looks so close! they laugh at the fact they were taking a lot of cocaine and playing a whole lot of wow. But I bet its not too far from the truth. Maybe if they spent a little less money pimping out the foyer with custom Duke nukem graphics and more time on actualy producing product they would not be in the mess there in now.

^^ Agreed. Rocket Science Interactive, Ion Storm and Acclaim were guilty of the same "sin", and look how they ended. Fitting, I say.

http://kotaku.com/5245883/duke-nukem-fo ... alms-grave I actually looks kinda promising. I mean its a game I would buy and play. if they got the humour down I think it could be a suscessfull game. But if you actually expect to make any money then no.

simple math. Its been 12 years of devlopment.
there wages were how much? I mean it must be a lot they were riding on the coat tails of Duke for the past 15years or so.
the cost to actually produce what they have done so far?
Could the game actually recover what its cost so far?
It would need to be a combined console and PC release to really make an impact in the huge bill and your looking at even more money for that then they would need to really hammer the add on packs and maybe throw in a quick sequel just to make that back.

If it was me (and believe me I really want to play this game) I would just quit while i still could.

Hi, I can't reveal anymore than the barest details about myself here, but I am somewhat close to the situation to be able to comment. It's true that DNF is now a dead project, but 3drealms still owns the IP and all the assets in their entirety. It's basically like this. Scott Miller went to Take 2 to ask if they would provide some funding to finish what is an 90% complete project. It seems there are some higher-ups at Take 2 who hold a grudge against 3drealms and refused to put any money into the project, offering to sell back the publishing right for a ridiculous amount as correctly reported in this thread. Scott and George understandably balked at this amount, and took the decision, albeit drastic to pull the plug entirely on 3drealms and DNF. Now here's the interesting part. As I said before, all the assets, tech, equipment are still owned by them, 3drealms having been a private company. The current plan, as will shortly be revealed, will be to develop a new i.p using practically all the same assets that were used in DNF except under a new guise at the recently founded Radar which is not affected at all by this situation. In effect DNF will still live on, just not in its current incarnation, name, storyline etc. Selected developer will be-hired, though unfortunately not all. This might sound hard to swallow but there will be an announcement of a new title from Radar at the latest within the next few days.

If there's any truth to the 90% done part, then here's hoping for an Internet "leak".

So basically it's going to be a totally different game? They could say it's anything, then.

^^ In other words, they just bought themselves another excuse to delay "It's Not Duke Nukem but feels a lot like it" for another 12 years.

lol, 3DRealms

I say we get Gn'R to do the soundtrack to the game. That'll only add another 14 years to the release date.

Wasn't there a very early leak on the net from the super-uber-alpha version which was before they rebuilt it from scratch on different engines?
Or was that just an urban myth?

That would be really sly considering that 3D Realms was supposed to give all their (35+) developers royalties: "a real percentage of all revenues the game makes, including all revenues from derivative products, such as strategy guides, novels, action figures, movies, ports, you-name-it!"

So in effect, start up a new company with minimal staff, finish up DNF, rebrand, release and rake in the cash.

There's an idea - we ought to get Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew or whoever it was promise to buy everyone in the country a drink if DNF is ever released. That'll get things moving!

I wonder how many people saw this news and went back and found/bought Duke3D to play? Because I know I did.

is it me or is this one of the most elaborate marketing ploys ever conceived? Im kinda waiting for them to say. Due to such high demand we have struck a deal and it will be out soon and then everyone goes and buys it and every one loves it becuase it was brought back from the dead. becuase up until about 2 weeks ago everyone had pretty much written it off completley and saying it was going to be shit. Now everyones saying it was going to be the greatest game that never was.

EDIT: dont get me wrong, I want it bad! really bad. I mean I was playing doom up until this came out. I used to pwn my bro and his mates across dial up modem.

The only ones who wrote it off as being shit , without having ever played even one second of it, are the folks no one with an ounce of intelligence listens to. The rest of us have been taking a "wait and see" attitude, while hoping it would at least be a decent FPS.

Saying it's shit, or saying it's going to rock, doesn't make much sense when you've never gotten to chance to play any of it.

you know what the nets like dude. There could be three pics and zero fottage and people would write the thing off or hail it as the messiah. I am not one of either of these people. But I am one of the people who wants to play this thing. Big duke fan here.

Now somebody fucking buy the rights to publish this (if it really is true in-game footage that is...).

That looks really nice!

But a "leak" or "accidentally left behind" HD would be nice too indeed. ;)

They should have just thrown the additional money at it to complete it. I mean, the game may have been a financial black hole, but for 10 years, but at this point they probbaly could have said we'll give you additional funding but this shit has to be completed in the next year. Even if the game didn't turn a profit, which at this point is pretty much an impossibility, atleast some of the costs could have been recouped.
Feedback will set you free.

I find it kind of funny that the game turned out to be 90% complete right at the time it gets canned. And there had been no shots of the WIP, or at least a one-level demo shown previously, ever...

Nah, it's just my imagination. :P
