Dragon Spirit: Lead Into Genesis (DS Doujin AST)

Post by BIL »

Discovered this doujin AST by Magical Trick Society the other day, I've been enjoying it a lot.

>> Tracklist & Info

I guess it's melodic synth rock, with interludes of trance and classical piano here and there. Reminds me of Hyakutaro Tsukumo (Thunder Force V, Blast Wind & Hyper Duel OSTs), only less gravely dramatic. I love Tsukumo, but his stuff can exhaust after a while. This album has a sunny, euphoric vibe to it along with a handful of intense tracks.

It's on the whole an overwhelmingly upbeat album, with strong melodies befitting an oldschool VGM AST. The transition from the opening track to "The Paleozoic Era" is wonderful. I'd love to play a shooter with this as its OST!

Aplogies if I'm behind the times here, I had no idea this album existed. Very cool stuff if you dig Hyakutaro Tsukumo / SSH style synth rock.

I heard this when it was released. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I'm a fan of synth rock too, and I could have done without the trance and piano tracks. As with almost all remixes, I prefer the OST instead. Hosoe's best!

Some of the only doujin music I really like belongs to Es (a Zone of the Enders-ish game by 9th Night, only trial exists so far and these music samples [1] [2] are taken from the trial so I think it's ok). Sounds like a poor man's Sakuraba, but since I've never heard anyone been able to even approximate his style (emphasis on prog, not synth) in game music yet, I still dig it. Diadra Empty has some good tracks too, but it's a different style of music.

I like both of those songs a lot! Particularly the first's hammering drums and the second's harmonised lead synth. Have to admit, if you'd told me it was Sakuraba I'd probably have believed you. Only really heard his Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean stuff. But eh, good music is good music.

Siter Skain's Kamui OST is my personal favourite doujin soundtrack. I'm not aware of any other shooter music like it; if the composer (s?) had a specific influence, I'd love to check it out. It's sombre yet driving like few other game soundtracks I've heard. Stage 3. The Stage 5 boss rush theme is downright funereal, when it hits that pipe organ section. Link.

I guess I'd compare it to Soukyugurentai's OST, but it's both a lot colder and faster-moving Sakimoto's bombast.

Oh yeah, Kamui is great. Don't know how I forgot about that.

The rest of this post I'll just PM you because my link would just be taken down anyway. :P
