Progear
Gradius I, II, III
Darius I, II, Gaiden, G.Darius
R-Type I, II, Leo

Excluding vertically-scrolling games in horizontal orientation, of course.

Hyper Duel.

Much better on Saturn, but the vanilla AC version is still great fun. The newest MAME seems to cock up its timing for me, though... downgraded to Wolfmame 0.101 (available here) and it worked perfectly.

No love for Gradius?

I'm more a fan of the MSX ones though...and Space Manbow. Of course, if you use MAME Plus! you can switch to MESS drivers which should include those systems.

Metal Black and Hellfire seconded. Just fyi, you can play Hellfire with or without checkpoints (Singleplayer or 2P Simultaneous ROMs, respectively).

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
