damn bomb pride
i wish i could get over myself and use bombs when i have them. don't know if anyone else does this but especially in my attempts at gunbird i die alot of the time with 4 bombs or even more in stock. i keep thinking 'i can cope with this' and it usually turns out i can't lol.
is this a common problem with others? just thought i'd get it out in the open lol

I think it's fine to not use bombs...
Because when you think you can cope with it, maybe not this time, but eventually you really can.
I find personally, if I bomb, I'm still all uptight thinking about how I'm going to handle the next wave of bullets. But if I die, I get a little bit of time to think about the wave that just killed me and if I can remember any potential safe spots.

that's true. but then again i know stage 1-4 of gunbird so well now that the only time i die is through a stupid mistake (which happen far too often for my liking) and i can see these coming so i just need to train myself to avoid bombing purely for survival purposes. plus if you have 4 bombs and you die, you resurrect with not only 1 fewer lives but also only the standard 2 bomb stock. this can screw up an overall strategy completely, and entering a new area with no bombs basically causes me to die horribly....

I have said it before and will say it again.
Using a bomb is an admission of failure.
Learn your patterns, do not bomb through them.
Raizing bombfests are the exception to the rule, as bombing will increase score, which is the goal.
Edit: grammar

... if everyone in the crowd is deaf. Whenever I play a shmup there's usually nobody around to see what I'm doing.freddiebamboo wrote:Using a bomb is like yelling in a crowded room that you have a small penis
My 2 cents: Bombs are weapons that your ship is equipped with, and are useful in dealing with certain situations just as other weapons are good for some things. They are given as part of the game, so use them when necessary.
Bombs also insure that the shmup is "fair." For example if you get yourself into a situation where it seems impossible to dodge, or if the game puts you into such a situation, then that is when you need to choose your "bomb" weapon to stay alive. Some situations may actually require the bomb to be used, just as other situations may require your other weapons. Nothing wrong with that. In this sense the bombs keep the game "possible" to 1CC.
Anyway if you're so full of pride then you shouldn't pick up any powerups either. The game should be possible to complete with the pea-shooter alone.
SHOOT IT QUICKLY !

sorry but i totally disagree with you there. bombs are there for a reason. if you are going for a no bomb runthrough then don't use bombs. you can't criiticise someone for using one. it's like saying that the reflect shield in mars matrix is kind of cheating. bad example i know but you get my drift. plus it's a psikyo shmup = layered bullet patterns, fast as hell shots, characters with ifferent bomb characteristics that don't even clear bullet patterns etc. for me psikyo bombs are usually far more tactical as you have to worry about placement and time to take effect etc

How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
If you are playing a shmup for the purpose of seeing the entire game but not really getting *into* it, then bombing through it is never a big deal.
The problem is when you are trying to master it.
Usually, I'll be liberal with bombs (if a part that I think I could reasonably die at turns up, I'll blow one) until I only have one left. That way, dying only takes away one bomb, so you don't feel like you should have used it, and you still have one if you *really* need it. If there's a part you *always* use a bomb, then either plan to use one there everytime, or decide to take it without a bomb. If you go the second route, try to hit that point with *no* bombs so that all you'll be losing if you mess up is the life.
It also depends on whether you are going for score (the advanced goal) or going for no deaths (the regular goal). I'm usually after the second of those, so I usually use bombs defensively if I think that I won't bullet-weave properly.

Let's consider only games in which using bombs primarily hurts your score. Does anyone know of a case in which someone ignored using bombs right from the beginning of his "training" and earned results comparable to any of these:
- Gunbird 2: 1,245,600 (2-4, Alucard)
- Strikers 1945: 1,134,700 (2-6, Bf-109)
- Strikers 1945 III: 2,236,000 (ALL, X36)

Does 'Power Release' count as a bomb? More like a homing missile..Cause I like doing that rapid fire.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

or a big... oh what?
or is that a small one? i can't quite figure out the possible layers of irony...
just got well into stage 6 of gunbird.... the 1cc is so close i can smell it! i find the last stage pretty easy in comparison to the 6th one for some strange reason.
on that run i lost 4 bombs due to stupid death on stage 4... d'oh (slaps head)

You people and your 1337ness.
I try not to bomb because bombs feel cheap to me. I enjoy it more to try surviving without them, usually. I accept that that isn't exactly a logical, well-reasoned stance, but I don't play games for logical soundness anyway. Who does?

You L33T people who think you are too good for bombs......I bet you all feel stupid when you like five bombs in stock and you run into a stray bullet.
Bombs are meant to be used people....
(Unless you get bonus points for saving them, then hog them as much as you want)
