Hey everyone. Longtime forum lurker but rare poster I was curious how long it took you guys to get your first "meaningful" 1cc. I've been working on DoDonPachi for about a year now...played it heavily last summer for a few months, then took a few months break, and have now been heavily into it again.
I'm sure I've invested at least 60 hours into the game and can consistently get to stage 5 but I've really seemed to hit a wall lately. I get real twitchy knowing how close I get on my serious runs but damn if it isn't frustrating, hah.
So how long was it for you before you got that first serious 1cc?

I'm in the same spot you are with DDP and I've been playing it pretty frequently for 2 years now, although not too heavily. It depends on the person I guess.
My only meaningful 1cc is Ikaruga's easy mode (with easiest extend settings and 5 stock) and that took at least 6 months - around 30 hours. With default settings in easy mode I still can hardly get past stage 3.
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
Some people play games until they 1cced them and them stop completely, this can do either one of two things, make you play a game you don't like for longer than you would have OR it makes you stop playing a game you enjoy before you got all the enjoyment from it (there is usually a lot more to do after the 1cc)
I'm not saying that I completely forget about it, but I see it as something that happens naturally when I really enjoy a game and put time into it.
that being said, it's often a good indicator that someone "knows" a particular game relatively well.
My first meaningful 1cc was about a year after i started playing shmups "seriously". But as i said i don't try to get 1ccs, there's a few games in which I can reach the final boss consistently but have no desire to "complete since I don't find them "fun" enough.

My most meaningful one was Mars Matrix.
Like you said, I played it heavily for a while and then took a break. Later on I got back to it and didn't settle until I had it.
Man it felt good!
Meaningful? that would be Battle Bakraid, it took forever and i'm sure I won't be able to repeat it without spending another eternity on it. Shienryu Explosion took about 5 credits.
I think Flying Shark was my first 1CC. That' took me a couple of weeks, mostly due to only playing it in the arcades when I was about 14 years old and almost always strapped for cash. After that it was pretty easy, until I started playing CAVE games.

The law of dimishing returns applies to 1CC sessions...it really easy to screw up and have to start again from scratch -- starting way back on Stage 1 of Loop 1. Even it happens to the best ace Japanese shmup masters from time to time. ^_~
The very first arcade game 2CC for me were on Capcom's Hyper Dyne Sidearms (USA region) but ended up being a 2CC since the very last stage worm boss would wipe out all my remaining lives thus requiring a second quarter to finally polish it off for good. I was able to 1CC Data East's Heavy Barrel (USA region) and could assemble the Heavy Barrel super weapon just before taking out the evil dictator with his mechanized monstrousity creation -- a few well placed blasts from it and it was toast. ^_~

Imagine a spilled cup of coffee totalling your dick and balls in one shot, sounds like the setup to a Death Wish sequel.
been playing shmups for around 18 months , bakraid was my first 1cc , ddp didnt take me to long to 1cc esprade took me longer personally .Espgaluda only took around 15 hrs of play to 1cc however ive put around 60 hours into my alltime favourite garegga and still no where near 1cc ha .
It took me about a year to beat Raiden II's first loop. I played it casually for a few months, never expecting to beat it. At some point, I decided to memorize safe routes through the trickiest areas. The 1cc came a few months later.
DDP was my first meaningful clear too. I had been playing DOJ for months on PS2 before finally scoring a copy of the original DDP. It took me only a week of hardcore playing to get the 1CC, but after playing DOJ so heavily it was like the weights were off and I flew through it.
Raiden Fighters Jet was my first 1CC, which took me about two school quarters (or 6 months) of consistent play. During that time I was visiting the cabinet 3-5 days a week in my breaks between classes, which each spanned, on average, 1-2 hours; somewhere around 150 hours of total play, I believe. I most likely could have gotten the 1CC quicker had I ignored scoring, but I’ve always been a firm believer in playing for score from the get-go. When I finally did get the clear, I had a pretty respectable score to go with it.
The next game I focused on was DoDonPachi, which took me significantly less time to clear; a couple months, I believe. It was quite a while longer before I started hitting the second loop requirements, though.
4 months? I played Mushi Original off and on until I finally managed to pull it off. I know, very late to the party and stuff.
Playing Touhou actually helped my shmup skills entirely, because I can interpret patterns better now. Of course, most people just look up replays if they're stuck, but I managed to beat a couple of them on Lunatic without resulting to replays.
I also refrained from bombing as much as I possibly could. Sounds nuts, but this is why 1ccing games takes me so long, as I generally try to play for survival instead of taking the easy way out. Mushi Original is a complete breeze with bombs, since you can just bomb on anything difficult (Stage 3 boss, final pattern. Stage 4 boss, second pattern. Stage 5 mid-boss, boss, fourth and possibly fifth pattern).
Ikaruga was my first. I don't remember how many years it was from when I first played it, since there were lots of breaks and perhaps even a year or two stretch where I didn't play any shooters at all.
Once I sat down and started focusing on it almost exclussively, however, I think it took me a couple months and about 80 hours of playtime to get the 1cc.
captpain wrote:Well, Bakraid Normal and Batrider Normal are almost not meaningful 1ccs in my opinion, in that they are really really easy to get.
Way to crush our spirit.
Played shmups off and on since i was a kid in the 80's and probly never 1cc'd any of them. Then visited this site and learned about this thing called '1cc'.
3 months later, after 50hrs of effort i had my first 1cc - Battle Bakraid. And i'm proud of it, regardless of the many forumites that are god's gift to shmups.
I play for score and survival, avoid bombing, and avoid strategy threads and replays, which all slow my 1cc progress considerably.
I share nimitz' sentiment of getting the clear while having fun with the game. This was clearly the case for my Mushi Maniac clear, because I was so involved in the scoring that I just got the 1cc eventually. But after that, I kind of rested from it. That game can be pretty anal when doing crazy scores o.O
Raiden Fighters Jet was mine, but it wasn't an ALL, just 2nd loop. That game brought me to these forums, and ultimately into this odd fascination with stgs that people around here share.
EDIT: Oh, how long it took? I played for like 6 months, going to a local arcade to play the US version on a stand up cab. Some times I'd go 4-5 times a week and play for hours while I was there and smoking cigarettes (before the smoking ban was put in place) good times.

like a year for espgaluda but i didnt play it super hardcore. id play it for like a week at a time, few runs a day and then stop playing for a month and come back to it later.
<BEOWOOF> my lifes like battle garegga every time i kill man life becomes harder and the only solution to making things easier is killing ymself.
<SCRUNBABBY> my lifes like gwangs
<SCRUNBABBY> cause .. theres lots of wangs
My first meaningful 1cc was Death Smiles. Being that the only other thing that I've done that was close to a 1cc was Blue Wish Resurrection Heaven, and that was autobomb ridden hell.
Took me around 40 or so credits to get around to it.
Sonic R wrote:All my 1cc come from games that are pre-1996 and were all done on games on home console, and around these parts, they are not consider meaningful…
I'm also a big fan of these pre-1996 games.
You're not alone!
I worked my way up from easy freeware shmups to console originals then to actual arcade shmups. My most proud 1cc's are shooting God mode 1-All in Demolition Gunner remix and DDP:DOJ DL 2-1 which was total luck at the end but was still awesome.
Sonic R I'm shocked you never 1cc'd any Raizing games, or Mushi for that matter.
Kollision what is your avatar from? It looks so familiar.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.
batrider took me 3 days about the same for bakraid.. ddp i had been playing since 2003 but i stopped playing it for quite a few years before regaining play in 2008.think it took me about 3-4 months on and off play to start hitting the second loop..
ketsui tho is my most meaningful clear.. that took me 2 months of solid play on the evening and weekends and well over 1000 credits
First was Thunder Force 3. Took a few tries; don't remember how many. Second one was ddp for me. Took about 6 hours of save state practice. Other significant clear was Gradius 5 as I was playing this game well before I played any other games. My clock time is over the roof in that one but I guess the actual time spent practicing and doing runs would be around ~40 hours.
