How awesome is the genesis nomad?

Post by CMoon »

I'm not a huge portable fan, but the whole idea of being able to play fireshark, truxton, musha, Raiden, Thuinderforce 4 or whatever else is enough to to make the $100 or so these are going for on ebay seem like play money.

How do you gentleman like this console? Is the screen acceptable? Controls? How long does the battery pack hold up? I heard one person describe it is annoying, which is why I felt I should ask before I buy--since if it is decent, this would be about as exciting as handhelds can get.

From what I've read, the screen is a perpetual blur and the unit goes through batteries like a machine gun does bullets.

Yeah, I don't even care about the batteries, but if the screen is shit, it isn't worth it.

The screen is a bit of a wild-card.
It works just fine with some titles, and flips-out with others.

Unless you're a particularly zealous Genesis fan, there's not much use in tracking one down. They tend to get expensive

Not very awesome at all. The screen just bites.

The screen is just about on par with the one on the Game Gear, and tends to be blurry and hard to see. In shmups, it's often hard to see the bulletspam. As for batteries, I couldn't tell you, since I've only used mine on an AC adapter, but it takes 6 AAs, and presumably chews through those in nothing flat.

Better to wait for good PSP emulation, methinks. Or buy a laptop.

I was lusting after one of these too, but the screen complaint is pretty unforgiveable.

That is really, terribly unfortunate...

I had one - great system, yes it does use batteries quickly - there's a rechargeable pack available. Screen is nice and bright but as others have said, blurs depending on game quite badly - shmups aren't really great on it, platformers are brilliant.

Rechargable packs aren't too hard to find. The problem is finding one that'll actually hold a charge, since the batteries inside would by now be well past their prime. You're probably better off with rechargable AAs these days.

It really does depend on what games you wanna play on it.

My friend has one, I'd say for him it was worth it. Both of us loved the idea of a handheld Streets of Rage... And Streets of Rage 2 looks and plays fucking beautiful on nomad. :P

As does Revenge of Shinobi and Sonic 2, I'm yet to try Phantasy Star on it. Again depends on what you wanna play on it, I personally wouldn't reccomend it for playing shmups.

I'll throw my opinion in here as well. Personally, I don't think the scren is as blurry as most people say. I've played Gaiares, Wings of Wor (Gynoug), Fire Shark, Steel Empire, etc. with no real problems except that some of the bullets are hard to see, mostly because of the small size. Sonic 1 & 2, Shinobi 3, Spiderman - all great action titles that play well on the unit. Columns also plays quite well on the Nomad.
