SF4 Championship Mode

Post by KindGrind »

Has anyone tried this yet? I played a couple of championships yesterday, and I like it. Not revolutionary or extremely different from the ranked/player matches themselves, but still. Seems I stumbled upon lots of really, really good people that had yet to make their way up, mostly in round 3 so that's fair.

I have never played against Guile so much though. He's quite a pain... I played as him a lot before so I know what people had to endure now... I feel for them :) Not that Rog (that I play now) is easy to play against either.

Oh and people who abuse crossovers are truly the worst. I mean, I can take a few here and there, but when you rely solely only on it to win I feel it's like an exploit. I see more and more of these as I progress...

Anyways, share impressions/frustrations on the new mode.

I'm afraid crossovers (barely jumping over a character, hitting just as you pass him so that you score an unblockable hit which you can combo from) aren't like throwing, or any other moves mentioned in the article that are "used to win". I use an effective character, who doesn't do anything pretty or fancy. I tend to win to flashy people -within my skill range- who do lots of ex cancels and long combos, only because I do what is needed to win and nothing more.

The problem is that the crossovers truly do exploit a programming ambiguity. When ALL the hits of a fight are done like this, I mean, one cannot help but feel tricked. Of course there are ways around it, but it seems the tactic is spreading more and more... Were I "better", surely I wouldn't be complaining... but I know I'm not the only one.

You just don't know how to respond (unless you play a certain character like claw as I do). Beating crossups executed by average gamers is ridiculously easy in SFIV with certain characters (esp. shotos). That's one of the major complaints really how dumbed down crossups are.

I guess you're probably right, I don't know how to properly deal with it yet.

buffalo headbutt. it's got good priority and goes so far forward that you can usually get away easily. i find the main problem with cross-ups is the lag that playing online induces. i play honda and the easiest way to deal with crossups is to use a butt bomb after they cross over, but it's a small window and the tiniest bit of lag screws it all up.

Well, this is generally what I do. Against charge characters, it leaves me quite open and I end up eating a roll against Blanka, for example. He crosses up, I bhb, he still manages to juggle me.

I played again today, and it's not too bad really. I'm on a roll... :)

The most refreshing thing about Championship Mode is blind-select means half my matches aren't against people counter-picking Blanka. I'm fairly indifferent to the Championship Mode itself, it's just me playing games as before but the points are calculated in a more esoteric fashion.

All I really want is a player match lobby that supports multiple people...

eventhub.com is excellent.

Just curious... how many battle points do you people have in ranked matches?

Don't forget to supplement the aforementioned with parts two and three, if you haven't already.

I thought it wasn't. While it's written in a really good way, it's basically just repeating one fact over and over.

Most n00bs fail to grasp that one fact over and over unfortunately.

crossovers with lag is by far the most annoying thing second being hit by something random like the average fireball when you know you held back, but because of the lag, you weren't holding back yet, shit is stupid. the easiest way to avoid crossovers obviously differs between characters, but one thing to keep in mind is to mix up your "wake up" games. there's just so many options. tech or not tech, shoryuken or throw, ex or not ex. You've gotta mix it up otherwise ryu will crossover you and mid punch you 3x then do whatever other shit that ryu feels like doing. I'm sure this is common sense to most reading this but what else is there to do about it besides mixing up your game?

Missing a link and eat a DP or SPD reversal is really annoying, against laggy people I have to play so dry.

If they don't time their reversal perfectly (which is pretty difficult in and of itself, not to mention combined with the 2 wakeup times), it's an easy mashed dp. I'm not sure I should be saying anything but due to input and directional auto-correction leniency, there are well known methods of pretty much guaranteeing dps. No mixup required. And that's why it's really unsafe to pull off meaties in many cases.

The best way to avoid lag is to go to an arcade

Good luck finding one with Street Fighter 4, if you aren't living in Japan.

3200BP on the way up. I don't play often in ranked matches because of the insane shitload of Sagat/Gouki/Ken around. Friendly matches are damn better variety wise.

I'm sooo looking forward to trying tournaments as soon as I get my system back (friend borrowed it)

I have the choice of two arcades within a £1 bus journey. Neither of which are in Japan (last time I checked).

there is also the other option of....

Current Gen Console + SFIV + 2pads + Friends + Beer = Much better fun than online gaming + beer induced lag.
