Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena install limit?!

Post by ST Dragon »

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena was recently released.

2 years ago I had enjoyed playing "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay" and had reached up to a pretty far point into the game, but didn't complete it due to time restrains at the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.html?curid=11437209

I have the following queries:

1. It seems that there is a "Remastered" version of butcher's bay included in the package, so it might be a good deal to purchase Athena and finally complete the prequel at the same time.
How much of an improvement in the graphics department is this remastered version of Butcher's Bay by the way?

2. I also noticed that there is a limitation on the number of times you can install the original game in your PC?!
What's this nonsense?! What if I format and re-install Windows after the 3rd time?
If that's the case, what's the point of buying the original then?
The PC version of the game comes with a similar type of DRM system as the earlier released Electronic Arts Game: Spore, with Atari citing 'combating early piracy' [11] as the reason for its implementation. The DRM system is similar in that it limits user with three total installs during the entire lifetime of the game and would require connection with an online server to verify the install.
3. What are the system requirements for Dark Athena?
How well would it play on my rig on highest settings @ 1280x1024?
Intel C2D E6600 @ 2.4GHZ
2GB 800MHZ
GeForce 8800GT 512MB
WinXP Pro

Thanks in advance

I read somewhere that they want to patch out the install limit after a month or two, but I wouldn't trust such promises too much.

According to this, your computer should run it 60FPS in 1280x1024 (without AA)

Edit: Looks like that thing about patching it out was just a brain fart of some mod at Atari forums. forget about it.

Interesting... Thanks!

Is Dark Athena a DX10 game by the way?

Well, they aren't getting my hard earned money for their 3 try license then. ;)

I had interest in buying this for PC before, but just read about the DRM on wiki as well as elsewhere, and as a result I won't be buying it. Atari can go shove their DRM garbage. I hope other people refuse to buy it for the same reasons.

From what is being said in reviews, gameplay wise, it was not what people hoped for either and the story line was quite dull actually.

A bunch of big-name games have had something like this. They've tried to weasel their way out of the nastiness of it by increasing the install limit and/or allowing you to get a "refund" by properly uninstalling, but that's just delaying the inevitable. It floors me that people with the power to mandate this kind of stuff are so detached from reality; both the reality that their customers hate it and the reality that the warez crowd doesn't give a damn because it'll be cracked anyway (probably before it even hits stores).

Besides, I really doubt Atari, the servers or the helpline will be functional during the game's lifetime. They have the mentality of "play the game when it's new, hype and profitable".
People who play old games after it is no longer supported do not matter to them.
