Seems to me if you actually didn't care, you wouldn't be posting. Oh right, unless you were trolling.Zweihander wrote:This is another one of those things where I'm supposed to pretend that I care, isn't it? :'(GaijinPunch wrote:Do you stilllZweihander wrote:If the game was region-free, I'd import it and play it on a friend's 360. I think people would like you more if you didn't come off as a maniac depressive.Sonic R wrote:No one likes me - how can I be held in any kind of acclaim?
This thread is fantastic. We have one person who hasn't played the game much, and calling it overrated. On the other hand, we have someone who has equally not played it as much, but won't judge it after they've played it to death. Then we have a Ketsui owner claiming it's the holy grail of gaming, but hey that's not acting like a PCB elitist or anything. Then we have someone judging Ketsui by Ketsui DS, which is a different game entirely.
All of these opinions are wrong.

A D-pad I'm comfortable with = poor controls, and stage 5 = not a stage? Gotcha. Guess I shouldn't judge Mushihime-sama by the PS2 port, either, since it's equally shitty. All I remember is a few months ago, everyone was jacking off hardcore to Death Label's bullet porn. Game of the week, I suppose.Elixir wrote:So you think you can judge a game, having played a 4:3 variation on a handheld with poor controls which doesn't even include stages.
Yeah that's not wrong at all, my bad. You might as well judge the rest of the Cave by their cellphone games while you're at it.

Ketsui DS is missing the key aspect of the scoring system. It's basically like Blue Wish Resurrection, where you only need to get close to enemies for them to drop 5's. In Ketsui itself, obtaining 5's requires you to "group" enemies, by picking off one with your shot, which then brings up a counter that rapidly falls from 50 to 0. If you were close enough to the small enemy when you picked it off, you'll get 5's within that time frame. Killing stuff barely keeps the timer up, so you have to repeat the process often.
And that's basically Ketsui's scoring system for you, not going into bosses or any of that shit. Ketsui DS doesn't have this, nor does it have any stages. A few random popcorn enemies that don't even incorporate this isn't a good example to compare with.
Difference is, Mushihimesama PS2 is based on Mushihimesama. It isn't a great port, but it's still comparable. Ketsui DS is based on Ketsui's bosses, but it has a different scoring system and different feel. So like I said, you might as well compare the cellphone games they've made to the real ones.

It's very simple. Buy the PCB, play it, sell on the PCB - the true cost of a game is the difference between the price you pay for it, and the price you sell it for (less shipping costs, natch). All told, it will probably cost you USD$50 tops (and in fact it cost me -USD$180 to play Ketsui - one of the few PCBs that I've made money from). However, you would need to have several hundred dollars you can afford to have tied up for a month or two.Zweihander wrote:[Again, how the fuck am I supposed to play something not readily available to me?
And I'm with the "Ketsui is great" club - I bought it a couple of years ago as my housemate at the time was hyping it up, and I was not disappointed. I sold the PCB about 6 months ago 'cause I needed the cash and it is currently overpriced (IMO), but it is one I quite regret selling (along with Espgaluda II).
Overrated? Possibly - I won't be selling a kidney to re-buy the game. A solid shooter? Definitely.

You can also look for some shmupmeets close to your area, that's how I was able to play it. I've had the pleasure of playing Ketsui, Mushi Futari, ESP Galuda 2, Death Smiles, Muchi Muchi Pork, and several others, and I've never had to leave the midwest. In my experience shmups fans are pretty easygoing and not the overdramatic otaku you draw them up as.Chi_Ryu wrote:It's very simple. Also this is of course assuming that you can be a reasonable guy in person and people would let you in their house... i.e. this whole annoying "like I care" schtick is just a forum trolling put-on.

$180? No thanks, I'd rather have Panzer Dragoon Saga or Hyperduel for that much.Chi_Ryu wrote:It's very simple. That's MINUS $180 (as in after selling it, I had $180 more than I had before). So I could have them, too - and have played Ketsui (oh wait, I have!)Zweihander wrote:$180? No thanks, I'd rather have Panzer Dragoon Saga or Hyperduel for that much.

As previously mentioned, Ikaruga is most overrated shmup this decade. Ketsui, is not.
That should have ended the thread four pages back.

Meh. Still, that's an initial $800 I don't have. Dunno if anyone here has noticed, this isn't exactly the economy to be buying needless crap at the moment.
Now, maybe if 5bp decides to make the 360 port region-free (since it's not mandatory and IS up to the publishers), then I will buy that. $200 is the most money I will put down on a single shmup, or a single game within any genre for that matter. (I'm still iffy about plopping $175 on Metal Wolf Chaos)
Sorry I can't be as high-brow as the rest of you.
