Kenta Cho games

Post by Shatterhand »

I got rRootage a month ago. I found it nice, but I didn't like the way it's structured (just for quick blasts, not a "long run"). I ended up not playing it too much really.

Now I got Noiz2sa , and I also didn't like the way the scores are separated for each level...

But I LOVED the endless modes. More games should be done like that. Insane endless is indeed insane :)

Any chance of a high-score thread for Nois2za ? :D

I am now getting Tukimi Fighters AND torus troopers.... did him make any other game?

Parsec47; it's kind of like noiz2sa on speed, and there's nothing but endless modes. :)

Tumiki Fighters is structured differently from other games from ABA games. It actually has levels and bosses like a typical shooter. It's also the only cute 'em up from ABA games. There's the Noiz 2 Java game, which is kind of like an earlier version of Noiz2sa.

Kenta Cho also made some non shooters. A7XPG is kind of like an updated version of Nibbles with a much bigger emphasis on speed and time. It's a great game IMO. There is also this great track and field like game that is controlled with the mouse.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest Parsec 47 as well.

I think that covers all of his shmups...

Tumiki Fighters is a real hazzle to score attack. Since you pick up the enemies you kill, and they continue firing for you, with some luck you can reach this "critical mass" where you kill everything as soon as it enters the screen, adding on further to your ship and giving you loads of points.

But one stray bullet can easily take away half your spare parts, lose you your cricital mass and eventually blow you to hell. Quite frustrating some times, but I guess many shmups have this exponential score curve.

I'd say Parsec 47 and Tumiki Fighters are the best of his games to score attack, though. rRootage is more for self-satisfaction: "I want to avoid some bullets without having to think of any stupid score!"

5. Noiz2sa
6. A7Xpg

they're all really cool though.

1. rRootage
2. Noiz2sa
3. Tumiki Fighters
4. Parsec 47
5. Torus Trooper

This is based on the OS X ports. P47 and TT don't run particularly well on my computer, so I'm probably not experiencing them to their full potential. It took a few weeks before rRootage really clicked with me, but once it did, it really won me over. So much replay value, 120 stages, 4 modes of plays, it's quite the experience.

im not too fond of cho games.

my favorite, rrotage doesnt run too well on the computers ive tried it, hella slowdown in the latter levels.

torus trooper, however, is the shit.

i hope someone reuses the concept and make a full professional game, it just owns, but the basic idea needs some work.

racing/shooting works very well, i cant believe none got the idea earlier (i dont count gimmicks such as mahou GP thing, cant remember the exact name)

Sorry The vagrant, but I bet you don't even understand how Torus Trooper has to be played. This game seems flat but if you go for score it's very interesting.

parsec47 is the best ABA game for me followed by TT (Tumiki Fighter would be great too but I don't like horizontal shmups too much).

I can see where that's easy to misinterpret:)

One of the things I like about Cho games is this: many are games based around a few concepts, like in music they are "a study" of an idea. They are then rounded out with increasing difficulty and some levels.

At this they succeed incredibly. I am a very big fan of Mr. Cho - not only for his skill in coding games, but his generosity. He gives these games away, with source. And BulletML to boot!

I think Penny Arcade can settle this linguistic confusion:

Love this guy. Even more so than zun (Shrine Maiden) mostly because what he does is so damn fresh, plus that I respect him more since he doesn't get paid for what he does.

My List:
1. Tumiki Fighters
2. Parsec 47
3. rRootage
4. Noiz2sa
5. Torus Trooper
6. A7Xpg

Downloaded Torus Trooper,

it won't launch - it says there is a missing SDL.DLL file,

there doesn't seem to be that file in the list right enough,

anywhere I can get that and try adding it into the zipped ones,

then I can run the exe?

I need Parsec 47 but I can't seem to find a Mac version that works. I found a link for one on some Japanese site, but it crashes everytime I try to run it and that is the only link I can ever find for it.

Any idea of whether a working version exists and where I can get it?

I'm going to e-mail the address on the link given (in the other recent thread about this, first post) and ask them.

i also got a whatever.dll file is missing when i tried to run some kenta cho game yipped.
dbd

seemed logical enough to me..........

Post by dbd »

ho-k,

you've emphasised where I wrote 'zipped',

why then do you think that meant that I didn't unzip the exe?

If you download it there is a big list off all these various files that it takes to run it,

many of them are .DLL files,

the one that is asked for is not in the list.

So what I meant is that if that file was added to that list, that the exe uses to run itself, then it might run.

The first thing to try when some of these .dll files are missing is to get the latest video drivers for your card. That usually takes care of many problems.

Bill

edit: Though for the case of sdl.dll it seems to be a specific binding to sdl for "D", so ignore my advice :)

go to http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/index.shtml

or some other .dll archive find the file and download it to the file with torus trooper in it, that will generally take care of it, or just search you're computer you might already have a copy of the file some where that is off the program's path. in which case the copy and paste into the folder.

Maybe this is where you were downloading P47 from before:

http://shinh.skr.jp/osxbin/

That's where I downloaded my copy. I downloaded pretty much everything that was on that page. I haven't encountered any problems.

Just to clear up some stuff.

The SDL.DLL files is a library for SOUND stuff, not video :) (Well, unless I am wrong)

And I don't think updating your drivers will male any difference in that matter.

One of the Kenta Cho games I downloaded also gave me this same error, but I already had the .dll here in my computer, so it wasn't much of trouble.

Torus Trooper is AMAZING. I have only played it for once, and I can't say much of its gameplay, but the FEELING is AMAZING.

Tumiki Fighters is his best game IMO. It's simple, the patterns aren't too much complicated, it's simple fun, the way that I like my shmups to be :)

Parsec 47 is just another upgrade on his "vertical manic abstrat shmup" game :D. It seems to be the best of all them though (With rRootage being the weakest).

Fuck. I'm still having problems with it. Not sure what the problem could be. I'm updating my operating system to see if that fixes it.

SDL covers sound as well as graphics and input (joysticks etc.)

http://www.libsdl.org

As far as I know it's a simpler interface to work with than DirectX, though not sure what it hides/exposes wrt OpenGL.

It's never a bad thing to update drivers, it's certainly possible that a driver would include the SDL layer in addition to DirectX and OpenGL.

Parsec47 isn't particularly innovative, but it's very refined and intense. And fast, can't forget fast. I like the fact that it seems to forgive mistakes more than most shmups, without becoming easy, and the near-infinite variation is great. It's been my favorite shooter ever, for a long time.
